Years back on the Power Wagon forum. A bunch of guys was hydrolocking their motors just by running through deep puddles. A stock 3G Power Wagon draws air right behind the right headlight. Almost a straight shot into the air filter housing. Deep enough puddle with enough speed. One broken motor. I filled my housing up a couple of times before I got the snorkel. Last year at our yearly Rausch Creek meet. 2 guys hydrolocked their motors. Same water hole. The Frog hole. Just google it.
If someone made one for the diesel. I would buy one.
They do make them for the diesel I know hauk offroad has them

You do that with a Gladiator, and you’ll flood the alternator.
That won’t make the alternator very happy.

Kevin
And that's weird. It should depend on the water, and length of time in the water. Technically speaking, if the water isn't brown, it should do no real damage.
It will likely not charge while submerged, but with sealed bearings, and all electrical components sealed save for the brushes and slip rings (assuming these had those), it should be no real issue - if you get out of the water and allow it to drain and dry. The damage, IMO, should happen later (oxidation) or by dirt or salts in the water.

The big issue with having water in the engine compartment is the idler pulleys on the Power Wagon. After taking the truck swimming. You can count on changing the pulleys out in a 1,000 miles or less.
Are they not sealed bearings? Maybe not REALLY sealed...........

Below - 1970 Motorola: Front and rear bearings are sealed, both sides. Granted water could be forced in, but unless under pressure, they are sealed quite well.
The rotor is the field. Water will ground out the field and it would stop charging while wet, however, the water won't conduct as well as copper windings so it should not "ground" or "short" to the point of damage.
The stator consists of copper windings. I've had them in mild solvents to clean them - no damage. They are connected to sealed diodes. I can't see water doing damage those, either.

Look where the alternator is mounted on every single AMC build with a V8 since 1967......... bottom. You go through a puddle, it gets wet. And yet I've never seen one messed up by water (and I have restored many many dozens of them)

The idler pulleys have a cheap metal shield. I have a pile of them under my work bench.

My stock alternator lasted until 85,000 miles. Replaced it with a 270 amp high output alternator from DC Power.

The short answer is no, it will not increase mpg.

There is an extremely long shot that at low rpm it could increase air intake velocity and provide more torque. If that were the case, it would be in a very narrow band when the resonance waves all line up perfectly etc.. I am guessing that is not the case or all of the snorkel manufacturers would be making those claims.

Get your intake away from some ground dust, yes (just don't negate it with a reusable filter). Get your intake away from water, well it will help.

Interesting note - where I live the temperatures have been crazy wild. 61 today. It was in the 20s days ago.
On the SAME tank of gas I was having trouble getting up to 18 with the lower temps. Today, the same driving style and the same paths I was pushing 19 average and I noticed the "current" or instant mpg display was a lot higher most of the time than it was a week ago.
I have also noticed that this truck actually does bad with cold air, does fine with 60 degree ambient temperatures.
Besides, there's a lot more to it than the raw air temps on these vehicles.

Also noticed that when a friend added a cold air "funnel" to the front of his race car, it really only mattered on the track and only a couple of tenths.

That tube receives air from the opening next to the radiator. The air intake into the air filter is the box on the passenger side of the engine bay. Inside the air filter box is a drain hole. The air has to move upward through the filter into the tube leading into the top of the engine. I think water would have a hard time navigating that pathway.

Completely off topic, but I inherited some Nike Air Jordan socks from my basketball-playing son when he outgrew them. I can with 100% certainty tell you they are worth the money. Soooooooo much more comfortable than any socks I have ever worn in my 53 years on this planet. I'm convinced I can run faster now.
It darn tough or bust for me!!! Life time warranty super comfortable best thing I’ve ever put on my feet!!

Even as a Pennsylvanian? Their shop is right down the road from me. Nice folks.
Too much piping under the hood. Looking at heat soak. Then you have to buy the extension. And that is in the wrong location.

I see. Looks like they put it in the same location as on the 3.6.

Plus I didn't think it will pass Pa. inspection. Blocked vision.

By the time it gets to the front it's hot air again. Pretty sad, IMO.

I didn't even think about that. I've been considering their low mount intake on my 3.6. Now I'll have to take a second look at that one. Because even that one is partially blocking vision. Nothing like a fix it ticket after you spent hundreds-thousands on mods. I see you picked up your gladiator today. How are you liking it so far? Love at first sight?

Yep. The IAT will be high at low speeds. Lot of heat soak in all of that piping under the hood.
