EcoDiesel: Intake Silencer Removal?

I was part designer of that tuning sleeve and we manufacture the entire air intake from the box to the turbo. I wouldn't remove that tuner as the turbo noises are pretty loud.

Lol, "the turbo noises are pretty loud" is exactly what a lot of people are looking for!

So, is it just there to silence the intake/turbo or is there performance difference there? How much does it restrict airflow? Is there any danger for the turbo in removing it?

It is only noise. We didn’t see any reduction when we ran the CFD and when we ran it on our flow bench. That being said, we are limited on how large we can make the intake based on the environment package. Aftermarket intakes don’t have to abide by clearance requirements to surrounding engine components and what’s called “pedpro” which is a law requiring so much crumple between the hood and any objects under the hood so if you hit a pedestrian, they are protected from immediately hitting a much harder object. I’d love to offer to make you guys some assemblies with the tuner deleted, but we would be in trouble with Stellantis! Now, I made my own 3.6 without the large resonator and must say it sounds nicer! Ha!

I forgot to mention, if you did “dig out the bit with the holes” and just have the outer shell without the inner tuner it will act like a plenum chamber cancelling a lower frequency coming out of the turbo. It would also make for a “lip” entering back into the rubber elbow before the turbo which would likely reduce the performance/airflow/HP. The best solution would be to say tape up the holes on the inside surface, drill a hole in the outer shell, fill it with epoxy, then remove the tape. But don’t put anything inside that could come loose and make it into the turbo, that would be catastrophic to the turbo!

Interesting stuff, did you see some of the posts about guys getting their 3.0L filter boxes clogged with snow during storms?

No I didn’t. There is no snow shield or alternate intake point for the diesel box… it was considered early on. They must have been in some serious snow because shakedown determined it wasn’t needed. We did just have some complaints coming through about the bellows coming loose from the air box. Have you guys seen this? I’m guessing a service shop didn’t reconnect the OxClip correctly.

No known or perceived issue on mine, and thats up here in Whistler BC Canada Ive seen considerable snow fall. But after a snow storm I never looked either.

Good to hear some insider info and correlation between CFD SW and bench. This will help any forum member thinking of ripping into the tubes. I know exactly what you mean when you said the lip will create turbulence.

@JT4000 that was you over Nova Scotia wasn't it?

The snow here in Atlantic Canda is often very dense, wet, heavy stuff. It packs very easily and densely. That being said, yeah I assume some snowbank womping action must have been involved, not just driving along in a snowstorm.

Yea that’s one option but I feel like it’s just some pvc stuck together. I’m thinking more along the lines of the Mopar one for the gasser. But I feel it won’t happen. I’m just barking up a tree lol

Imagine the turbo sound you would get with a intake at the bottom of the a piller into an un silenced cold air intake like the momentum. Windows down listening to that turbo suck air like it’s meant to !!
