Maybe this is just how it is but is anyone else experiencing tapping sounds with their 3.6? I know there was an issue in the past with roller rockers when the engines had high mileage (100K) but my JT Rubi has been doing it since it was driven off the lot. I took it to the dealer today and the girl that worked in service dept had me open the hood so she could listen to it....I am sure she is a 5 star mechanic and all but she said "that's totally normal". Anyway to me it sounds like an old school diesel Mercedes from the 80's. Is this normal? This is my first Jeep with this engine. Any help is greatly appreciated.

do they have other jeeps with same engine on the lot? have her start one up and compare.
I would be using my mechanics ears and see if I could figure it out.

Supposedly, they are now using new parts which no longer have this problem. Be prepared to hear that from the dealer. I understand it is normal to have SOME ticking sound.

My Rubi make the same noise you are describing, I have had other engines of the same design that had a ticking noise to them. As the article said if it's a problem it is going to set a DTC.

I believe that engine issue was in 2010-13.
Give or take some months. They are honoring those engine with 10 year warranty for the left side heads. Supposed to all be resolved. I’m sure there are still some out there with an issue. Anyway.... the ticking sound may be the fuel injectors pulsing.
I honestly haven’t listened closely to mine yet with hood up. My F150 with hood open made a clatter. It was the injection system.

Mine does it on initial start up with a cold motor (sitting overnight) and usually goes away within the first 15 minutes... Not TOO worried about it, but planning on bringing it up when I go in for my first oil change.

I would bring it up, but not worry about it to much. With a good synthetic and a few miles you will probably only hear the tapping for just a few miliseconds on first start up. One thing to note if you are parking on an incline this could add to your start up time

Like I said not TOO worried about it, my Hemi did the same thing. Didn't even think about the incline, may street park tomorrow as my driveway has a fairly steep incline to it.

I think it was 2012 to 2014 because 2010 & 2011 had the totally different 3.8 anyway just adding to what you said

Mine is an automatic. Still making the noise as loud as ever. It may just be me being used to my old SUV. It was really quiet.
I believe there IS a problem in your case. I have a 20 JT LER and the engine in mine is dead quiet cold or warm with 5k miles. The dealer will keep putting it off in hopes the warranty will run out before the real problem manifests itself. I had a 2012 JKU MW3 with a 3.6 with a tick. I traded it before the noise got more noticeable. It was coming from the right rear as was the case for many.
