So I am just over 16,000 miles on my JT and though I havent crossed water that went above half the height of my stock tires (so say 15” deep, half of fording depth) I am thinking of changing fluids at 20k as several folks on the JL forum have said (some even sooner at 15k saying it was bad)

So far here is what dealer is saying quantity and prices (rounded) are
9.5qts of Mopar ZF 8&9 at about $30/qt so about $300!
3.38pts of Mopar ATF +4 (1.7qt) at $9.50/qt So $20
2.18 and 3.06 pints (2.6 qts) of 75w85 gear oil for front and rear at $50/qt so $150!
Motor oil - 5qts at $9.50 a qt - $50

That is over $500! Now, I got a gallon of Red Line gear oil for $80, a gallon of Mopar ATF +4 for $35, 6 quarts of the ZF for $130, and 6qts of Penzoil Ultra Platinum for $60. So some savings but damn next fluid change is going to be $350

Why change them so soon?

But yeah, modern fluids are expensive. On the other hand, the change interval, and the longevity of parts, has gone way up.

Also, are you looking at doing the transmission too? That would be totally insane.

This past weekend I emptied my chemicals cabinet of Mopar fluids I bought for the JKs to have on hand for later, and never used. $200 easy. I'll never buy fluids early again.

I can't find any evidence that the recommended intervals are too long. What have you found.

Differential fluids are rather bad even at 15k miles so folks on the JL forums are changing theirs before 25k

I changed my JKUR, which is effectively the same, at about 30k. I sent the fluid to Blackstone Oil Labs for analysis. They said I could have run it at least twice as long.

"Pretty bad" means just that it looks bad? That's not a good measure. If "pretty bad" means some kind of objective measurement, that's something different. I'll go see if I can find a copy of that oil test.

The diffs use only 1-1.5 quart of gear oil, and since it is unfiltered, I would change them after break-in and then every 20k or so. A good time to change them would be when you get your Motobilt or other aftermarket diff covers. After 1000 miles, my front diff fluid looked fine, but the back was already getting dark.

So I know factory spec is 75/85, anyone really think an extra 5wt of more common 75/90 synthetic would be bad? I almost think Mopar spec'd that because it's less common and you might come to them for it.

I just plan on doing it every 20k or complete submersion, whatever comes first.

OEM and boutique branded fluids are going to be like that for cost. You could easily half those cost numbers buying other well known branded and suitable spec'd fluids.

Couple with changing earlier than recommended, that is a double whammy to your pocket book.

So i just picked up my Overland had a gear change, at 500 miles i decided to change the gear oil so i went with royal purple synthetic i have a rear limited slip & the gear shop said my limited slip was half warn down I’m at 13,400 miles. He said synthetic allowed too much slip & wear . For me to use conventional gear oil with limited slip additive. It’ll do better.
