I bought a cheap-o universal winch cover. Keeps snow, ice, water, dust, sun off of my synthetic line. I think is was $15-$20 off amazon, definitely a worthwhile buy

Ditto on the heated garage however I thought I would say more than just that; Even when we lived in North Carolina, we always had all of our vehicles in the garage as UV is incredibly damaging. I've always wondered why families park their vehicles outside and utilize their garages as 'storage' given that their vehicles are, likely, their second largest investment. Anyways...my family in the South has a carport, albeit for different reasons than you described, but is that an option for you? If not, there are plenty of options available as far as weather resistant or weather proof car covers. That small investment will probably pay for itself quickly even if you only use it a couple of times per year.

Want to hear how much I baby our JT? We live in Iowa and have had a terrible winter between the snow, ice and temperatures. Our Gladiator hasn't left the garage for a few months. I've started it, pulled it forward and backwards, etc. We have 'winter' Jeeps so I applaud you for actually driving yours; I am too afraid to get salt on ours!

I'm in the same area as the OP but didn't get quite as much ice. My Gladiator over the holidays was just the inspiration I needed to clean out the garage so I could get her in it. Must say it was nice not having to chisel the ice off of it this morning.

Wait until you visit Santa Monica....

Sorry, I meant to just say you pay a lot more by living in California. I will say that the only part of Cali I have personally been to for any length of time was San Fran/San Jose and that's the most expensive part.

Another Kentuckian with a frozen vehicle this morning. But it was my Suburban. The JT was under covered parking due to the leaking rear window . . .

Yeah, took the 496 a while to thaw the 'Burban.

Good day though. Took my in-laws to get their second vaccine shot.

-6F out currently. -22F (-30C) projected for Sunday (-34F with the windchill). 2 years ago the battery in my wife’s patriot froze solid. Didn’t even know that was a thing. Fortunately have a semi heated garage now.

Drove out to Santa Monica last week and ate a light picnic lunch on the sand. About 70 degrees, and the sunset was beautiful. Then drove east out Santa Monica Boulevard to La Brea and then south to Pinks for a world famous "Brando" hotdog before heading further east home. Didn't see any ice on the way home.

Cheap tarp, vehicle cover or cardboard was what family used years ago. Now I just try to live in warmer climate. Oh I remember them damn ice and snow storms of midwest especially that lake front snow and KY too.
I've been snowed in near Danville, KY area 3 times. A few Army buddies and I had a long walk to get to a phone that worked, to call our unit to let them know we was ok. We had 4×4s but no chance of driving out of there.

  1. To de-ice, you can pee on it (not joking), poor vodka/alcohol, or spray with WD-40. WD-40 will free up frozen or rusted parts enough to get them moving.
  2. Once the winch cable is moving, then you'll want to get out the water that's in the cable that is causing the freezing. A propane torch can make quick work of this.
  3. You then want to seal up the cable with silicone lube so no water gets back in the cable fibers.
  4. As mentioned, a simple winch cover is your best bet (assuming garaging the vehicle is not possible).

It's so crazy to think that you can drive a few hours and the climate is just that drastically different. It's been at least a decade since we had a bad ice storm in my neighborhood, and I can only remember snow sticking a few times since.

I may have to take the kids on a trip just to see the stuff if we don't get any this year.

Ice storms suck. But at least this one didn't knock out power. I think it was '03 Lexington had a severe localized ice storm. We were without power for 8 days. That was interesting.

If you can believe the weather forecast, we are in for another week of this stuff.

That stinks. Just watched an Amazon van get stuck on level ground in front of my house. And me with a new Jeep and no recovery gear yet! And the chain I typically keep in my Suburban is at camp. Shame on me.

When it gets cold and STAYS cold, it certainly presents a challenge. We're not used to our precip hanging around for days around here. And ice is the worst of course.
