I thought we were talking gassers - so I'm bowing out. I wondered where the "gen 3" bit came from, then looked up where he had posted this.
I was confused when i saw your comment, thought i had accidentally skipped couple pages 😂

Yeah, not sure why I was mentioned in a diesel topic, but this would be my thinking if it was mine:
If I had a WK2 with a diesel that has been reliable, mostly trouble free and had gone the miles, I would be inclined to stick with it, rebuild or repair as needed and not invite trouble. "The latest" isn't always the best choice. (Or the easiest). What would be the goal or point? If it's been a solid, reliable engine, stick with it and avoid the hassles.

I’m would think that all the Jeep models and Ram 1500 would be using the same engines and I’m curious if the Gen 2 could be replaced by the Gen 3 when the time comes for a rebuild?
It would take a lot of customization to replace your factory Gen 2 with a Gen 3. It would be much easier just to go back with a Gen 2 engine.

Thanks biodiesel. That’s not the answer I wanted but it does let me know that it won’t work.

The Gen 2 is a good engine, assuming its built right from the factory. I wouldn't hesitate buying a Gen 2 crate engine or installing a rebuilt engine from one of the reputable engine builders.

I'm hoping to get another 200K out of it before I have to rebuild or replace. Wife loves her Grand Cherokee and we would like to keep it going for many years to come.

I've seen one Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel with over 425,000 miles and another one with over 500,000 miles.

The highest mileage EcoDiesel I've seen is a 2015 Ram with 594,000 miles. Actually, the owner just hit 596,000 a few days ago, but I don't have an updated image. If you remind me, I can post when he hits 600,000. That should happen sometime in the next few weeks.

It is impressive. I get updates throughout the week from various EcoDiesel owners. I just received a text with this image. The owner just logged 9,999 engine hours while towing a load. He's got 417,817 miles on his 2018 Ram EcoDiesel.
