The word is @Mules had a bunch of extra fiberglass and resin, and wanted to use it up. ? ?

Although I think his muffler placement is going to kill his departure angle ;)
Looks like my fiberglass skills got a lot better on prototype #2. She's a whopper! :)

I'm on the fence about painting it. Spend a couple grand getting a pro to color match my jeep, or rattle can paint it textured. What do you guys think. Here's a youtube video.

The size of what your painting your going to run the risk of seeing streaks with a rattle can. Assuming you don't have a lot of experience painting. A textured may not be that bad or even a bedliner style. I would think for all the hard work you've put in and then to see some imperfections with paint would be a bummer.

I would opt for the most robust solution while maintaining some level of aesthetics. A thicker more durable paint will increase the protection for all the manual labor you’ve invested into this project and I would hate to spend the hours to end up with a halfway done product with subpar finish.

The votes are leaning towards getting a professional paint job. I ran to a couple local paint shops this afternoon to get quotes. For the Crystal Granite color, one shop estimated $1000 for paint, and maybe $500 for the body prep, but wanted to see the shell in person for the quote. The second shop will get back to me in a day or two.

The conversations about the quotes were short, but answering all the questions about what the heck it was took a long time :)

i can imagine the conversation ?

“It’s an upside down fiberglass boat that I personally fabricated into the body of my Jeep to enable it to function as a pop up camper”

Do you know how much time I could have saved by just using a John boat for the pop up! Next project is a boat..:like:

Alright, here are the three paint options:

Rattle Can - About $100, and I don't think I'll be able to do a nice enough job (although I've seen some impressive DIY's with cans).

Professional Color Matched - About $1500, and the way I'm leaning.

Monstaliner - About $300, truck bed liner coating. It's super durable, rollable, sprayable and comes in different colors. Pretty impressive, but I'm still thinking color matching my truck. Here's an incredible example of Monstaliner.

That Monstaliner is a cool option. Could be worth going that route if you plan on going through a lot of trees/tall brush.

Definitely a tough call. I love the idea of the color match because it’s what I’ve been picturing in my mind (and seeing on your profile pic). You’ve put a lot of work into it and seems that’ll showcase it best.

But having said that, I’d agree with @FitfulGoat - if you’re going to be encountering a lot of brush/trees on your overlanding go with the Monstaliner.

Just forget the rattle can thought!

Alright, you guys have made some good points. I haven't bought in 100% yet but the Monstaliner samples are on order. It's hard to believe you can roll on a good looking paint. Monstaliner has a hundred examples of entire vehicles painted in the stuff, and it is compelling. Below is a link to examples, and their facebook page has even better examples.

I love monstaliner! I have done 2 LJ tubs and my most recent project last year was a Waverunner. I did a 2 tone paint job and rolled it on. I will say I have a bunch of Jeepers in my local club that use Raptor Liner and have a local paint shop color match their OEM color.

I painted my whole camper in monstaliner for about 500 bucks. Been almost perfect sitting in the Arizona sun for 3 years. The only issue I have had is a little cracking and flaking on some high flex points. Most likely user error in the application though.

What about tint able raptor liner ? You can get the tint color of the granite crystal and spray it in at home as long as you have a decent sized compressor. I’ve helped with a tj and a Tacoma for full sprays. I’ve also done several odds and end pieces it’s really easy to use
