Normally record TruckU on Motortrend to see if they are doing anything interesting, halfway through watching it, but one of the first things they mentioned is this oil filter pressure kit from Baxter Performance.

Basically they said the pentstar engine drains all its oil to the pan in about 20 minutes, so every time you are starting it it's starting dry until the oil pumps back out of the pan. This Baxter Performance kit is supposed to keep the oil in the engine instead of draining into the pan between starts, prolonging engine life.

Any comments on this? I really like the oil filter the gladiator has, much easier to change than the standard spin on type, but if it would prolong engine life, is this actually an issue and a fix, or just trying to sell something not needed?

That whole show is a commercial for products. I’d take anything seen with a gain of salt.

I enjoy the show as well. Yes it is all a commercial but that’s ok with me. At least it’s not a remake of a remake of a remake like most shows now. I did watch it today and looked at the Baxter kit but not sure I’m that worried about it myself.

Not so sure about that.. The Jeep / Chrysler Certified Tech at my dealer stated to change the oil filter before draining the pan because the other way will result in Oil from the filter draining down when the filter is removed; and that is the way he does on all 3.6L's.

I watched that episode today, I looked up the Baxter filter adapter on Baxter’s site. I don’t like that the oil pressure has to overcome the spring loaded valve to allow the oil to flow, seems like if somehow that valve didn’t open the engine would not get any oil.

Some more snake oil to buy.........if the motor got that dry (oil less/dry start) it would eat the bearings in the first 36,000 miles.

I watched it this morning too. As a part time tech, it's a gimmick. Save the money for a catch can or something for the trail.

The OEM filter is supposed to have a anti-drain valve in it to keep oil up in the top of the engine.

Thanks all, thought I had seen most the stuff for these 3.6s, but that one was new. Made sense on the show, but normally the products are generic (oils, lubes, ect...) This one was specific to the 3.6

If this was such an issue, don’t you think the millions of pentastar engines would have been changed at some point ?

Whether or not it actually helps, they are incentivized to convince the viewers that they need it. Someone posting about it here shows some level of success.

I don't think I've been convinced that I need it, but thousands of products get discussed on these forums, whats the difference?

Excuse my ignorance, but gravity? Doesn’t every modern engine drain oil to the pan in between starts? Lol

Some have a check valve that prevents the oil filter from draining down and then having to be filled when the engine starts before positive oil pressure can occur.

It's being discussed, in this thread, because it appeared on the show. No one may buy it, but it has now been introduced to people that didn't even watch the show. So, some level of success for them.
