Auto companies can't afford to re-invent the wheel. Glass is a dynamic industry, there are companies that can product millions of pieces of glass for a fraction of the cost MOPAR or most others could. Some companies were originally founded with the sole purpose of supplying automotive glass to companies like GM, etc.
Absolutely! My 73 Javelin windshield doesn't leak, my 82 SX4 windshield doesn't leak (neither does the factory sun roof I installed). Duct tape is the handiman's secret weapon but urethane is the leak-fixers secret weapon. Even I can fix windshield leaks - and silicone for just a task is beyond a joke. There's little excuse for a true windshield water leak - ASSUMING it actually IS coming in around the glass itself and not around the frame of the windshield, the joints for the roof and so on. We know there are leak issues with the A pillars, and I suspect the windshield frame may leak from time to time - not referring to the joint between actual glass and frame, but windshield frame to chassis.)
