Gladiator Wheel Offset

So what wheel would allow the tire to have minimal poking of my 35x12.5x17 tires outside the Rubicon fender flares? My current setup is perfect on the factory wheels but I am starting to wonder how much weight the “excess wear” has on the tires from being on factory rims. I would essentially be wanting 9.5” wide wheels and +5.5 to +6 backspacing?

I'm going to pick up some take off JL (sahara) or JT (overland) 18" factory wheels to run the 37x11.5r18 nitto ridge grapplers next. Sounds like that would fit your goals best. I'm running falken 37x12.5 mt's on stock sport wheels and love it, but like you i feel they are a touch fat for the stock wheel, but they don't make 11.5" wide 17's, 18 and 20" they do, black rhino mozambique would be my aftermarket choice for a 20", hope that helps and yes, you'd be fine with 5-6" bs, likely best around 5.5", i believe that mozambique is 5.9", pretty lightweight wheel that looks good too, silver one all the way, stay classy

JL/JT 18” take offs should buy well and then sell your 17” take offs and should end up even Steven. Just add the nitto 11.5” wide tires either 35’s or 37’s and Robert is your fathers brother.

I bought a set of Q-tec wheels for my JT. Thought the price was amazing. Ended up getting wheels that were out of round on at least 2 of the 4. Sent them back and got 2 replacements. 1 of the 2 replacements was out of round.

By out of round I mean I bolted the wheel to the hub without a tire on it, put the Jeep in 1st gear, and watched the wheel spin. It looked like an egg wobbling around. Became pretty obvious why my Jeep was shaking like a paint mixer on the interstate.

I was going to buy some new rims because I'm getting 38s and I wasn't sure my -12mm offset on my moto metals would stick out far enough to eliminate inner fender rub but now I'm not sure after some of you guys said backspacing is what counts. Right now with 35s they stick out alot on the sides. I googled the rim and it says backspacing is 4.53"

So, before this thread goes to hell in a wicker basket, I'll say this:

Rubicon and Max Tow have wide axles. I ran +10 offset wheels that were 8.5" wide for a while and there was enough tire sticking out that gravel was beating the piss out of my paint. I have no idea why a guy would want ANY negative offset whatsoever. Not only does it make the truck look like a skateboard, it's also not functional. It makes the axles as wide as a dually pickup, it blasts the paint with mud, sand, gravel, etc., and it puts other drivers at risk (which is why it's illegal in many states). Don't be that guy. Run a positive offset wheel.

Black Rhino Mozambique are +30, and there is a red max tow on this forum with some 18" on here, just search black rhino mozambique and you'll find his pics, or in google search black rhino mozambique jeep and scroll for the red gladiator with black wheels, it will bring you to his pics here. I only suggest +18 on the low end as there seems to be some wheels available in that range...ideal is more like +25 to +30 if you just want sidewall poke when looking down from the top edge of the fender and keeping tread edge right in line with that...sidewall pokes out further of course, but sidewall isn't what throws spray and rocks everywhere.

Not easy to find pics of positive offset wheels, i believe everything AEV are well into positive range. I started with the ever popular -12 offset on some 17x9 which translate to 4.5" back space, and it was a short lived experiment. Positive is where it's at. A +30 on a 8.5" wide wheel puts you about 1/2" further out than stock so a +25 would be about 3/4" further out than stock...assume same tire width in what i'm saying here of course (ie; if you had 12.5" wide tires on stock wheels vs 12.5" wide tires on 8.5" wide with +30).

If factory backspace about 6.1" and you're seeing back space numbers, then the mozambique for example is 5.9", so goal would be 5.5" to 5.9" back space to move out from stock but not into the spray sh1t everywhere zone. The mopar wheels are 5.22" backspace and to me they stick out too far...so magic is in the 5.5" to 5.9" range. Backspace a good number to use to not have to worry about what the different offsets mean with some of the different wheel widths, backspace will tell the full story. Mopar is 5.2" and stock is 6.1"....get in the middle of that somewhere imo.

Keep in mind offset is entirely tied to wheel width, in terms of fitment. The same offset on different width wheels will have different physical placements for backspace and front space. Use an online wheel calculator to get those backspace and front space measurements.

When I scroll through places like Discount Tire Direct, most everything I see is from 0 to +25 offset. Tire Rack even has a lot of positive offset wheels.

These I just installed on my Max Tow are +6 offset and there's a lot of tread sticking out beyond the fenders, particularly in the front. So much, actually, that I have a set of Rokblokz on order for the front. Gravel is already going "BANG!" when I leave my gravel lane each morning.

Do you have Max Tow Package or Rubicon? Those axles should be an 1” wider each side for 2” total. Correct?

Slight rub of tire on shock at full turn left when in reverse. Other than that, no rubbing anywhere else. Ride is good but not as good as stock. Wheels are way heavier and so are the E rated tires. Each tire and wheel is around 100 lbs. I keep them aired up to about 33 psi and that helps.
