History of vehicle: 17,085 miles, Oil changes: 5,000 miles or less ( "most around 3,000 miles”) with 0W20 Penzoil Ultra Platinum. Motor is silent except for a rattle on start-up that it pretty much has always done. When I change the oil, it's pretty quiet on start-up for 2,000 miles, then gets louder as time goes on.

While doing the oil change today at around 3,000 miles, I noticed some shiny particles in the oil filter, so I cut it open, and here are the pictures with some of the larger particles measured out. With this low of miles, I'm unsure if this could still be break-in material or if it's starting to eat a camshaft or something else. Scanned with Jscan, and it's not showing any trouble codes.

So I guess the question is should I be concerned or just send it?

I’ve decided that I’m not going to worry about it. That being said. I will keep an eye on it next few oil changes and send off a sample to Blackstone or somewhere. Based off of some reading on BITOG and some earlier posts here it’s probably just left over brake in material.

That piece would be too big to show up in a UOA. I would take oil samples going forward.

Filter did its job. You could be shedding deburr and casting slag for almost the life of the engine sometimes. The rest of the filter looks good but you really will not know state of health until you do an oil analysis.

A good quality oil filter doing what it is supposed to do. As others have already said, UOA to determine what wear metals are showing up. I wouldn't be concerned at this point.

I changed my oil today. 27,700 total miles, about 4,500 miles since last change. Found scattered teeny silvery particles. Magnet will pick them up. It was difficult to get a good photo, the particles just look lke dust in the photo. The filter looks pretty dirty, too, for such short miles of mostly highway driving. Fram Titanium filter. No ticking or other noises. Should I be concerned?

Just a suggestion going forward. It's always best to take oil samples at each oil change interval and send them off to a lab. This will give you a baseline for what is normal, what isn't normal, and perhaps help identify where the metal is coming from.

I'll probably do it from here on, unless whatever it is starts causing obvious symptoms. I've never felt the need to take oil samples other than with my old Cummins when I was doing extended oil change intervals. Actually, this is the first time I've ever given an oil filter a close examination. Every other vehicle has been spin-ons and I just throw them in the trash. I didn't take a look at any from prior oil changes on my Gladiator, either. Had no reason to suspect anything.

It's an added cost and requires a little extra work, but it's well worth it for those of us who are OCD about knowing what's going on inside of our engines. I have three vehicles and take oil samples on all three, but I also plan to keep my vehicles long term (25+ years), so monitoring the condition of the engine is helpful. Besides monitoring wear metals, it's also a good way to identify other problems (cooling issues, fuel dilution, etc.).
