So I have a set of 5 Mojave take off wheels and tires (285/70R17 Falken MT) that now have 35K on them. Overall, they have been great tires, I rarely notice the noise, and I am happy with them. I am now kicking myself that I did not get a 5th matching wheel and remount from the spare steel wheel so I could rotate it in. Is it too late? I know I CAN put in a tire with significant tread depth difference but SHOULD I. If I remount it now and rotate it in so that it never gets swapped out and all the others do, it I would get the most combined life and make my next tire purchase more flexible. The other option is to get the same tires next time and start a five tire rotation at that time.

do you want to have to clean that spare rim after you remove it from under the truck just save it as a spare, even on my Mini All 4 I keeep a spare around (can't carry one in the car) to toll on if I get a flat for a short time never had an issue

Good question. I don't think I would mind cleaning the spare every 5K. These wheels are pretty easy to clean.

I don't rotate my spare. It's still a Falken 285 whereas the four tires on the ground are now 285 BFG's. Long as it holds air and gets me somewhere its fine - but I didn't need to buy a 5th tire this time, so I wasn't spending the money on it.

Now, had I decided to upgrade to 35s, I was going to buy a 5th 35" tire, and with the cost of all that, I was going to buy a matching wheel and start rotating them.

I feel that choices 2 and 3 are both good. Mud tires generally need more rotations than the Falken AT3w that I have. I just use a 4 tire rotation pattern anyway. However, I bought a set of take off Mojave wheels so my spare matches, even though it lives under the Jeep all its life (hopefully).

Thanks for the feedback. I would have thought option 1 would be most recommended, so it's helpful.

I have a full sized 37" spare in the stock location*. It's mounted on the OE Overland wheel my JT came with. I rotate every oil change but I do not rotate the spare in.

*I replaced the rear OE trackbar with a Clayton trackbar to accommodate the spare's size.

I just bought new tires and mounted them XR wheels. I specifically bought 5 matching wheels so I could rotate the spare in. Having a steel wheel with a brand new tire has been driving me nuts. I'll be happy to have a matching space I can cycle in.

The OCD part of me is actually probably the basis of my question. I don't like that I have a brand-new tire under there that matches let alone if I get a different set and it no longer matches. I park on a hill, so I see it every day as I walk up to the truck. I am fully aware that I am probably the only one who will notice.

I too suffer form the OCD. Which is why I wanted a matching spare wheel with matching tire. Even though no one would notice. I would and that alone would be enough for me to do something about it.

I've never rotated the spare in on any truck I've enter owned. The fact that they don't ever include a matching wheel tells me they don't intend for you to. In the JLUR I'll rotate the spare in as it's easy enough and it matching both type and wear is visible. Under bed on a mismatched wheel? Pass.

When you use two different diameter tires with a clutch-type Posi traction, you will wear the clutches as the two axles turn at different speeds.

And if you put the spare on the front thanks to the fad it's not even physically connected to any of the other tires. AWD cars with front and rear limited slips mostly all come with run flats for the very reason you listed. Most everything else comes with a donut because it doesn't matter if the spare matches.

I rotate all 5 with current tires but at last rotation one tire has more wear than the other 4 so it's now a spare until the other 4 are worn the same. Or I change tires. Setting ready to install on rims.
