Sounds like the loose end of the strap fell over the bedside, and was pulled under the tire while the Jeep was rolling.

Spot on. The tire rolled (Reeled???) on the strap end, pulling the ratchet mechanism into the bed rail.

At stop light, hop out to fix.

Woman behind goes nutz.

Throw strap in bed, to pull in bank, to pacify.

Strap comes out, under tire.

Crunch.

I had something similar happen with someone. I was headed to the beach with my paddleboards in the bed with a bed extender. One of the cam straps came a bit loose and so on the road to the beach I slowed down and was doing the 25 MPH speed limit to make sure nothing got jostled as there is no turns or shoulder to pull off on. A woman starts riding my tail and then begins to blow the horn at me. I can see everything out the rear window (when she isn't too close and being hid by the boards) and didn't see any straps come off... but maybe I missed something? She then lays into the horn and I just come to a stop and throw up my hands in the WTF sort of manner before I get to my turn. She is cursing and swearing at me and I decide better than to "discuss" the situation with her. I start up and end up making my turn off and she speeds by and off and makes and heads home (only place she could be going with the direction she headed). All for doing the speed limit.
