So based on a few other threads I am posing a question regarding insurance.

I am interested in who you are with and what aftermarket items and/or interior removable items you specifically have covered.

Currently I have USAA and am considering shopping around. A few years ago I asked my insurance to up coverage for my old ‘97 OBS 7.3. It was totally rebuilt (not salvage) and quite expensive. Originally they said it is only covered under blue book, which was about 7,500. I was not ok with that as I put more than 50K into it (it was gonna be a life long vehicle till life changed).

So, now that I have a Gladiator, which is already more expensive, and already some expensive mods, like a canopy, lights, wiring, etc.. I want to try and get that stuff covered

Personally I find it morally wrong that we are required by law to have insurance but insurance (at least USAA) refuses to insure a vehicle for its actual cost despite charging you an insane amount. But as such is the law I want to find the best option to not only get maximum return in a unfortunate event in the vehicle but also the aftermarket items on said vehicle as well as interior items if a thief ever decides they want what I have.

Why not call around and ask?

I used to have USAA auto insurance for years. They become too conservative about their pricing. I now have American family. I have mine covered up to 75k. They will cover any and all upgrades that are documented with receipts. I provided them a spreadsheet of items and prices “that I paid” to get the policy upgraded. In the event of a claim I’ll need to produce receipts. It’s a two-sided coin though. I can’t expect coverage AND expect to remove aftermarket parts after an accident. I decided I wouldn’t want to be under a totaled vehicle in the snow doing that. They also cover me, even if a claim was the result of damage when off road.

Insurance policies on aftermarket additions are set by your state insurance commission, not the individual insurance companies. I also have USAA, but because i'm in a different state than you USAA covers up to 5k worth of owner modifications without prior notice, as long as I can produce receipts at the time of claim and it can be verified they are on the vehicle as it is being salvaged. Additionally, USAA offers a new car replacement assistance in my state (20% over ACV) at policy holder's discretion for an additional cost. I've got about 10k into my jeep, so I knew the 5k limit wouldn't cover me. I opted in for new car replacement assistance as the differential there will cover any mods over the 5k amount.

I maintain a separate email address for my truck (the truck's vin @gmail) that I only use to send maintenance records, and receipts for installed parts. Solely for a repository if I ever need it for insurance, warranty maintenance proof, or re-sale purposes.

Honestly, what you needed for old '97 or even a highly modified jeep is a Stated Value Policy or Agreed Value Coverage. Unfortunately, USAA only does Agreed Value Coverage for vehicles treated/driven like they are classics, and does not offer this option for modified vehicles that are driven regularly. Time to shop around.

I have Progressive and they cover up to a $1000 of after market parts. I added additional coverage for my rims and tires of $1400.00.and my policy went up $2.69 per month. Cheap insurance for living in Houston and having rims and tires stolen on a previous vehicle.

I had to get a separate policy for my aftermarket add on and parts. The agent asked for the msrp and my cost of the items to be covered. Winch and bed cap are the only two items I have covered on the extra policy.
