you were spot on. It is electric steering pump. Had my son turn the wheel for me and it started squealing. The only thing I can think of is of was that the wheel was slightly turned and was slowly recentering when I had it in park so it kept making the noise but that is definitely what it is.

I’m assuming normal for the electric pump to make that noise?
Cool, glad you could get it figured out.

As far as normal, I think it is. I've listened to other JTs and JLs when I see them out and about, and noticed they make the same noise. I've stopped worrying about it at this point until it gets louder or changes in some other way.

Yes, completely normal. Both of the gladiators I have owned have made that sound since the day I got them. The next time a random JL Wrangler or Gladiator pass by you in the Target parking lot, listen for it; I guarantee you will hear it.

Jeep needs to give a manual away for new jeep owners explaining all the odd sounds they make. This is the 2nd sound I never heard on any other vehicle. The other was the brake boss when pushing the brake while next to a wall or in the garage.

thanks everyone for help identifying the non-issue.

You’ll get used to the sounds soon enough and know what normal sounds like. The truck makes a LOT of different sounds and it usually isn’t prudent to chase them down. Just turn up your music and enjoy the truck.

I wouldn’t worry unless a sound starts to get louder over time or is accompanied by another symptom/issue.

One time after driving through alot of snow and bad weather and it was real cold out I went to take off and steering didnt respond 🙃. Well it did after a second and almost ran my own mail box over. That evening I got up under it unplugged the wires from the pump cleaned everything with alcohol(all I had at the time) and aint had a problem since . Thats been a year ago. Be mindful I have also had mine in extreme conditions and lots of water and mud splashing on about everything under there. And I have 134k miles . So your good to go .

This puzzles me a bit. I too have a steering pump noise when I touch the steering wheel but the intermittent sound from the pump is a low/mid range hum. It’s not an intermittent high pitch whine. But as you said, you found it when your son was working the steering wheel.

Great tool to have is a mechanic stethoscope to poke around to locate sounds.

What’s you milage and have you done a power steering fluid flush yet? I’ve gone one step further and installed a low pressure magnetic transmission/steering pump filter on the low pressure steel line. Keeps the fluid clean.

This location for the filter up front is also the flush location now instead of the more difficult and messy location at the pump.
