I don't know about the history, but I do know the current Chrysler minivan has a 3.6L Pentastar. Yup, we got a minivan engine.
It's used more in Jeeps than in the minivan. The minivan has a Jeep engine.

Contrary to some opinions, the Pentastar is a pretty good engine. I have 3 of them, 2 over 100K and they are running strong. The 12 JK had a head issue (first year engine) that was covered under warranty and has been trouble free since. The 17 WK2 has 140K on it and I have only done regular oil changes and the plugs at 100K. The Pentastar has plenty of power for me in all my vehicles. The Gladiator is only at 16K but again, I have more than enough power with it stock.

I don't get the Pentastar hate. Sure a V8 option would be nice but not everyone needs it. I never missed the V8 in the Grand Cherokee.

Let me add this parting thought. If our 3.6L Gladiators have a minivan engine simply because it is used in a minivan, then by your logic, the diesel Gladiator has a boat motor because the 3.0L diesel is used in marine applications.

Not sure who you’re directing this comment to. I said it before and I’ll say it again, I am happy with my jeep minivan engine.

My first jeep, an ‘09 JK had the old 3.8L V6. A sluggish poweplant that was woefully underpowered. My next jeep, a ‘15 JK had a Pentastar and I was pleasantly surprised how much pep that Chrysler soccer mom engine had in comparison to my old JK.

Then my JT has a Ram truck engine, or a Dodge Charger engine! Cool!

The Pentastar hate comment was not directed at you. It's directed at the people who thinks it's the worst engine that Jeep has ever put in a Wrangler.

You are right the 3.8L should be called a minivan engine. The 3.8L's problem was the pairing with the 42RLE and the gear ratio's run in the JK. That's what made the 3.8L a gutless wonder.

The 3.6L though paired with the NAG1 was a good combination and now with the 8 speed, has more than enough balls for me.

All dedicated car groups suck in some fashion. I haven't found to Jeeps to be any different in my opinion.

Just have to find the suck you fit well with.

Overall I like the crowd and content discussed. Some things are common to every truck forum.

how do I get better gas mileage, will a CAI improve my performance or mpg, recommendations on maintenance intervals without checking the manual, gimmicky engine mods, and probably the most common: how big of tires can I fit with XX lift.

Within a thread, someone will get mad and tell the person to use the search feature.

Someone will resurrect a 10 year old thread from time to time.

Just remember, tomorrow the same topic will arise again! (And probably for the 112th time)

This is all in fun, but a little truth too ?

Forum searches are fine - and sometimes they work quite well, but what not everyone knows is that Google will search specific domains - I've found stuff in these Jeep forums through Google that were somehow not showing up in the forum search feature itself. Weird, but...........
So for anyone seeing this and wondering why there's even any back and forth on searching or being yelled at for not searching or whatever......... search is your friend, but sometimes a fair weather friend.
And some people just like asking other people straight up in their own way, I suppose.
We are what we are - people.

(Oddly, I think this might only be thread number 2 on this topic!)

Nailed it.

Throw in what shocks should I run, asking what does this light on the dash mean (again, without checking the owner's manual), the occasional "this thing sucks and I'll never ever ever ever ever buy one again" thread, and that pretty well sums up the general vibe of your typical truck/Jeep forum.

one huge difference between the Toyota 4Runner forums and Jeep Gladiator forums -
Those guys are driving a big toaster and expecting mpg
Jeep people are driving bricks expecting mpg

So it's us driving bricks vs. them driving toasters.
(I'd rather drive a brick than a toaster, I guess)

The advantage to the brick is when heated sufficiently, one can still use it to make toast.

And that’s a fact. Kudos to Jeep for mating the Pentastar with the 850RE and creating the perfect pairing.

...the occasional "this thing sucks and I'll never ever ever ever ever buy one again" thread,
...and then they come back a few months later with "So, I'm now the owner of a great new one after saying I'm done"...
