Specs say the base weight is 5,072. I added the Mopar 2" lift kit, Falken 35x12.5 MT's, and ASFIR skid plates (70#). I just weighed in at a CAT scale at 5700#, full tank, nothing in the Jeep, not even me. How did it get that heavy? And with GVWR at 6,250 I'm now worried about adding Alu-Cab Canopy Camper plus all the accessories and gear, and staying w/in GVWR. I've read all the posts about GVWR and that many people exceed that, but that's not the point. How did I go from 5072 to 5700 by only adding those few items? Has anyone weighed their stock JTRD?

Did you weigh yours completely stock? That’s honestly the only way to get an accurate increase. As far as I know everyone’s is different. Rough ball park I’ve added probably 500lbs with sliders, winch, bumper and tires. It’s not hard

Don’t use published spec. since you probably had options added at the factory. What is the payload showing on your vehicle sticker? Subtract that from 6250 to see what your original stock (aka curb) weight was. That will tell you the weight of your new mods affect.

I did not weight it stock, that's why I asked if anyone else weighed theirs stock. I only added a lift kit, tires, and 70# of skids. It doesn't add up.

Nothing else, and I was not in the truck.

Don't see payload on the sticker. It says GVWR is 6450, so that's different from anything I've read. Where is the payload sticker??

Not trying to be the bad guy here…. Just saying it’s a lost cause. I have added frame mounted rocker guards, a leer topper, decked system full tank and me in it we are way too close to weight rating (I’m 225). No wife, kids or dog to point the finger at. This “truck” is a joke…. It’s only saving grace is the wrangler is equally as easy to hit the weight rating on ??‍♂

We are continuing the build regardless. Definitely going to be trussing the front and rear axle’s as a precautionary…. Outside that, not going to bat an eye at it. The brakes are more than adequate for a fat build.

Pretty much any overland build is going to exceed the rating.

Here is our jk sitting 300+ over limit without gear. (And to think this was 37’s- 40’s would have put us another 110 over weight….)

Just saw another post that says payload is 973 and curb weight is 5477. So, 5700 (CAT) - 5477 (curb) - 70 (skids) = 153 (lift & tire difference). That's a bit more believable . And with GVWR at 6450, I still have 750 to work with for the build.

You also mentioned "base weight" - where did you get that number?
That's a stripped down truck, no options at all, no bed liner, base tires, etc.
Sadly that's what the auto rags use is the base weight.

Just saw another post that says payload is 973 and curb weight is 5477. So, 5700 (CAT) - 5477 (curb) - 70 (skids) = 153 (lift & tire difference). That's a bit more believable . And with GVWR at 6450, I still have 750 to work with for the build.
DO NOT go by what someone else posted!
That's THEIR personal payload for their truck, not yours.
I've had two Overlands - almost identical options and yet my 2022 has lower payload than my 2020 did.
And anyone else with a JT Overland will likely have different numbers than either of mine.
You can't go by what anyone else has for payload. Your number is on the door jamb.
(besides, so much that's out there about this is iffy anyway)

I scaled my 22 JTRD at 5680# with a full tank and no cargo, all 5 37s and heavy 17" alloys. Spray in liner, mud flaps, and otherwise stock. They vary a lot from the factory depending on options. Now I've just recently added a rack and tonneau cover, then plus some camping gear and me and the woman we're probably over GVWR.

Reminds me of flying. My flight instructor was a slightly heavier set guy and I learned in a little Diamond DA20. We used to only be able to put in a few gallons of gas to keep it under max weight lol.

And as @Escape.idiocracy said, it doesn't really mean anything. Once you change even the tire size you've already committed to throwing al the numbers and factory engineering out the window. You've changed the entire vehicle dynamic.

Very nice analogy. The DA20 was a great little plane to learn on, but not try to go anywhere with. Even the DA40 with full fuel and two big dudes is pushing it.

22 JTRD here. Regretfully I did not weigh it bone stock - only after adding a winch and aluminum bumper. I did carefully weigh all those components going on and coming off: total +82 lbs.

Full tank, completely empty otherwise: 5561 lbs. Second check later, same scale, fuel full but somewhat less DEF: 5540 lbs. subtract 82 and I’m right around the 5450 mark that I’d seen several places as the JTRD spec before purchase

5072 as stated above is certainly neither a diesel nor Rubicon. In the plus side: GVWR on the JTRD is 6450, not 6250. Diesels get a +200 bump on GVWR. It’s less than the weight gain of the diesel/auto over a gas/auto, but it helps.

The answer is pretty simple. You didn't start at 5,072 lbs because that number does not include any factory options. The base weight of your JT is the GVWR listed on your sticker, minus the payload number on your Tire and Loading Information sticker (as circled in post #10). In short, you only have that payload # to work with to stay under the GVWR.

Here are the door sticker numbers:
6450 (GVWR) - 944 (payload) = 5506
Add 70 for skids = 5576
My CAT weight was 5700 (full tank & DEF, no passengers)
So the lift kit and bigger tires added 124#

Mystery solved. I appreciate all the feedback!!
