Huh. Defensive driving is good. And anyone who has studied anything knows that predicting the future is wholly irrational. So I'll take irrational and defensive! Also, you know one reason why I like driving a manual? I am not really not that good at it. True fact. It's a challenge. Simple pleasure when I grab the right gear right timing right place. Get a thrill Everytime!:rock::rock: hey OP sorry to thread jack. I'll go back in my pre-tech cave now...
Agreed! A manual seems to keep me more focused on driving as well. In this day an age of vehicles that do everything for you we need more of that. Or at least I do.

So my plan is to mix the focused hands-on driving experience of a M/T with the high-tech automation of the Active Safety Group and Adaptive Cruise Control. That is my Different Strokes.

“That presupposes that the people buying a manual option would not buy the vehicle unless the manual is offered, which I think is a bad assumption.“

NOT a “bad assumption “ in my case. I’ve had a couple of automatics in 47 years of driving. Didn’t like either of them. Don’t plan to ever buy another.

I think it is a bad assumption for "people," but that doesn't apply to "a person." A person is statistically irrelevant and these decisions (offer or not offer a manual) are based on statistical buying patterns. If you don't ever want to buy another automatic, that's cool. But the fact is, you are going to fine yourself with less and less options going forward.

I would probably buy a Gladiator even if I could not get manual trans, just because I like what it offers more for my needs and wants than the competition in the mid-size truck segment. But it was the MT availability that really pushed me to go for a Gladiator.

Does NOT seem to be the trend. Before the advent of the Jeep truck, there were only Frontier and Tacoma trucks available with a MT. So, in fact, the number of available MT trucks in the U.S. just went UP by 50%.

Cheers to that!

Maybe as far as models but I would say it's more than that because the 6MT Tacoma is only 5% of sales and the Frontier is even lower. I'd suspect the Gladiator has at least 2-3x that.

I mean my manual Tacoma was the only one within the search radius but the lot I bought my Gladiator from had about 25% MT trucks. The availability of MT Gladiators means I'd guess there's a 100% or more increase in the availability of the actual manual trucks.

That said, I do not expect a manual trans when the Frontier gets its update next year and I don't expect one in the 4th gen Tacoma either. Jeep will hold on to them but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the only truck available with one in 5 years.

The year before the Gladiator was announced, I was wanting a MT Tacoma, but never could find one to test drive. Late last summer when the MT Gladiator first arrived and I was able to test drive it, I still wanted to compare the Tacoma but there was not one with a MT on the lot anywhere in Phoenix or Tucson. A salesman I contacted nearby tried to tell me the MT was no longer made (I knew better.)

At the end of the year right before I ordered, I looked into it again and boy things had changed, there were 8 MT Tacomas in Tucson. I never did bother to drive it because I was decided on the Gladiator. I just now checked and there are 6 in stock in town right now. I wonder if the fact that Jeep started selling a significant number of MTs woke Toyota up a bit.

I briefly looked into the Frontier, and there were maybe two on the lot, period, both automatics. I'd wouldn't be surprised if it disappeared altogether.

I'm holding out for the resurgence. Pardon me, now. I need to go flip my vinyl record. ;-)
