My real world MPG... yours may differ!

I have a slightly modified and fairly heavy Rubicon that in daily operations averages about 5900lbs. My driving consist of 2/4 lane highway, city and some traffic. I live in East Tennessee so mostly rolling terrain. My average speed for all combined driving is just under 40MPH. I am on 37's with stock gears for now. I do mostly drive with fuel economy in mind. I should note that when checked by hand the average was 19.2 MPG. Previous Gladiator was a Sport S with 276/70r17 and was much lighter. I put 18000 miles on it in 6 months on the same routes as this Rubicon. It's lifetime indicated mileage displayed 22.1, but it actually got 21.5 MPG

I wish I got this good of MPG. I average about 14-16, long trips I get about 19 mpg - on 35" tires.

I picked up a 2023 Mojave 2 weeks ago. I have all of 400 miles on it and I'm getting shy of 15mpg. Everything is still stock. Please tell me it needs to break in. It's getting way worse mpg than my 5.0L F150. I know it's a brick going down the road but I figured it would be on par with my Ford or at least a little better.

It's getting way worse mpg than my 5.0L F150. I know it's a brick going down the road but I figured it would be on par with my Ford or at least a little better.

In my experience my fuel mileage went up about 2 mpg near around 5,000 miles. Anything over 65 will cost you mpg. I purposely drive 4 lane state highway around here and my average speed for a tank of fuel is right at 40 but that includes stopping and traffic. Usually driving 55-60. 37's on this Rubicon vs 33's on the Sport S cost me a little of 2 mpg. I drove with economy in mind as I travel 75-100 miles a day. I had a 2021 F-150 Super Crew with the 5.0 w/3.31 gears and 34's load range E and it got about the same. Had a 2019 with 3.5 Eco Boost and for 27,000 miles it averaged 21.5

I found that anything over 2200 -2300 rpm hurts my mpg. I hope this helps

Stock Overland getting 22-23 mpg around town 85 octane gas. Im at 4700 elevation though. Probably 26 or better all highway unless it’s really windy or going over 75 MPH

I get 13.6 on 35’s mostly off road or short trip errands around town. Not an aggressive driver.

Any weight gain - no matter where, tires or otherwise, will impact mpg. Tires can be a double-whammy. You also have rolling resistance of stiffer tires and wider tires, as well as the front they present into the wind (rougher surface, more surface)
Note that vehicles made for mpg hide the fronts of the tires.
Height also matters - wind under the vehicle catches the rough undercarriage.

So what youre saying is, I need full Aluminum skids! Thanks man! Gotta call the wife now! lol

I get 13-14mpg with my Mojave on 35's, with a SmartCap and Decked drawers as well as a roof rack holding my OVS 270 awning. On longer trips into the mountains I avg 10-11, and haven't seen 16MPG since I was bone stock. Wishing hasn't helped.

This was my experience as well! Honestly, the only complaint I've been sharing with people. I literally just had a conversation about 5 minutes ago. That said, there definitely seems to be some correlation to fuel quality/blend. I got the truck in the middle of January and put about 2,400mi on it so far. Up until about a week ago, the very best mpg's I got (on a relatively short road trip) was about 17.5. The rest of the time, I bounced between 15 and 16.5 which was surprising to me (predominately fueling up with 87 at CostCo which supposedly has top tier fuel ). I expected bad milage, but I figured I'd be in the 17-19 range worse case (not towing) and be a tick over 20 if I was mindful with my right foot. Last week I happened to be down at the shore in RI and fueled up at a Shell (87) and like a light switch, jumped up to 20-21 mpg, around town, with the top down, the whole family inside and a bunch of beach gear in the bed and strapped to my rack. Has to be the fuel...

Only at 1100 miles on it, but I am with city driving about 14mpg, got up to almost 16 with a 60 highway trip. Stock Mojave auto, only added weight is the Bak Revolver and bedliner.

I have a new stock mojave, auto and less than 1000 miles. First couple fill ups have been in the 13-14 mpg. I have my doubt about 19mpg combined. My JL Sahara I had no issues getting the advertized MPG, but that was a 2.0L turbo.

Same here......... We have just short of 700 miles on our 24 Mojave - totally stock.
We've been seeing the same mileage as you......... between 14-16mpg.

It always makes me wonder if the 'Winter' versus 'Summer' gas has anything to do with it.
Winter gas blends have more Ethanol in them to make them more volatile/flammable.

My previous truck would lose 2mpg in the winter from winter gas.

I live in southern PA - so its hard to know when you're pumping summer gas (or not).

You 100% lose MPG on winter blend with all the anti-gelling additives, at least here in Canada.

That's not how it works. There are winter and summer blends, but it's not due to ethanol. That's likely a wives tale - bet it was on the internet.
Typically they increase the Reid vapor point, or RVP, using BUTANE, NOT ethanol.
Ethanol-free gas even in winter is ethanol-free.
The difference is typically under 2% difference in mpg due to the gasoline alone.
Winter conditions also lower mpg - relative humidity (more water in the air, better mpg), colder engine temperatures, different A/F ratios on cold starts, frictions of the fluids like the gear lube, transmission fluid and so on.

So no, that's an internet "guess" that's very wrong as far as more ethanol. Typically it's butane and some other tricks, but not ethanol.

I just don't get why my MPG is so sh*tty. Mine on average is 13mpg and I don't think I have seen 15mpg. I am on 37s with 5.13 gears. Could something be wrong or most likely, I am the issue.
