Ok so two weeks ago when I was backing up my trailer up our steep driveway with just less than a 1/4 tank of fuel in it. After I unhooked the trailer (left it running) I jumped in and it was running rough and fuel light was yellow, I pulled onto flat ground and shut it off. I restarted it and it was still doing the same thing, shut off again and restarted light was gone and ran fine. Jeep sat for a week, started it up last Saturday and check engine light was on and was real rough so I ran up and filled with 93 did not help. By the time I got it back home the dash was lit up and it quite running in the driveway, the auxiliary battery light was on. I pulled both batteries and replaced them the jeep started right up smooth no lights I let it run for about ten minutes then shut it off and it sat until Tuesday. My wife started it up and the check engine light was back on, she drove to the store and back home. When I got home from work I was going to run it to check the code and it did the same thing only worse. Codes P1404 X2 P2097 and P2099 and one for a miss fire, any advice would be appreciated.

All those codes seem to be fuel related. I've seen this happen with my JKU and the issue was my gascap. I would try removing your gascap, then put it back on and make sure it is seated good and it clicks at least 3 times. I used my Superchips Flashpaq to remove the codes and everything went back to normal. Not sure if this will work for you but I always try the obvious things first before I start tearing things apart. Good luck!

Thank you, I will give this a try.

If you don't have a code reader, I believe disconnecting your battery for an hour will reset it. With my experience with Jeeps its not 'if' it happens, but 'when' 🤦‍♂️ But I still love them. Again, good luck seriously.

You need to see what those codes are, they will lead you to the problem.

Odds are the P1404 EGR code is causing the other two and is where I would start first.

The factory manual basically is a list of codes and how to diagnose the system. I would agree to start with the EGR code. I purchased a PDF of the manual online from factorymanuals.com but it’s like 20k pages and fun to navigate. The real deal is a subscription. Either way I have used it to diagnose other vehicles ( Jeep is still under warranty ). Someone may have access here and share it. I will see if I can find anything when I get home.

Ok, so I took the EGR valve off and cleaned it lots of carbon build up looked like it was stuck open. After cleaning it up I reinstalled it and started right up and is running fine now and no lights on the dash. I guess my question now is why after 25K miles this was in this condition?

Sometimes just the way it it. Engine is basically eating it's own shit through the EGR vavle and will soot up quicker if the exhaust has more oil blow by. I would check your PCV and maybe think about changing the PCV valve.

I believe quality of gas and oil have some affect as well as driving habits.

From your brief description of troubleshooting and diagnosis it sounds like you may do a lot of idling which is about worst case scenario for carbon deposits. Less idling and more spirited driving helps, but build up will happen regardless. 25k miles isn't much, but if you're out of warranty I'd assume you've owned it for quite a while and just don't drive it much. Idling and short drives just aren't enough to get engine temps up enough to help burn off deposits in my experience.

That makes sense, we do let it idle a lot to keep the dogs cool when its hot. I am also hearing from the responses we need to get out more. LOL
Thank you .
