To fix it, you order a new drag link tie rod end. Remove the castle nut, wack the pit man arm where the tie rod goes though, then you take a paint pen make a mark on the tie rod, and you start to unscrew the tie rod counting the number to turns it takes to remove it. Install new tie rod (which will have a new seal as part of it) and screw the tie rod in back to the number of turns you counted. Reverse install.

don't forget anti seize on the tie rod end threads.

Boot is ripped from removal. Yes it has been hit with a hammer but it should be fine. Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth looking for play in it. No play just keep driving it. My local alignment shop has seen stock JLs with bad rod ends. when you start noticing some play upgrade the steering
I did that there's definitely no play in it and it's driving fine I'm just going to drive it and I feel something weird I'll replace it

I know how to replace it i was meaning is it time for a upgrade or just go with stock one. I found the stock one online for $55 shipped. I also called my mechanic buddy and sent him the pics, he told me to just drive it's probably nothing to worry about. I got nothing happening out of sorts with the steering.

I would take it back to the dealer that replaced the steering box and request they fix it under warranty. They also need to tech that tech how to do the job properly so they don’t damage more Jeeps doing the same thing.

I'm definitely doing this when I go in for my oil change Monday. I already called them and they are aware. The service manager said if it looks like something they did they will replace it. I always have had a good experience with Hendricks.

Uh...yeah...that's something they did.
That's a direct result of the tech working on the steering box.
Used the wrong tool and technique.
That's pickle fork and hammer damage.
You can drive it that way for years but you shouldn't have to.

They sell the correct tool at your FLAPS

I agree 100%. The service manager at Hendricks is a pretty good dude. I'm sure he will make it right. Been doing business with them for almost 15yrs and this is only the second time I've had a issue similar to this. Last time they made it right with a buy back of a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Didn't even have to ask for it, they decided it was the best resolution and got the process started. When I go in for the oil change I'll get something worked out with him that may benefit me better than them replacing it.

Update, had my oil changed today and had them look at it. They definitely said the service tech must of did it. Not going to hurt anything but if they replace it they will only put a stock one back on. I figure when it's time to do it, I'll upgrade it. Instead the service manager said he could do an additional 4 oil changes and tire rotations and then start rather than starting the 6 I paid for today. Comes out to be roughly a $300 compensation so I'm good with that. Now I got 10 more oil changes instead of 6.
