The warranty clock starts running at the original purchase and does not re-set when a part is replaced under warranty. Below is the language from the Parts & Accessories warranty, but the same applies to the vehicle warranty:

This is dealer dependent.

I had the same exact symptoms and try to deal with it for a little bit by manually shifting, but it inevitably would go into limp mode. I would have to pull over and use my Tazer to clear the CEL.

83K and not under warranty.

Fortunately, I got a take off from a Hemi swap donor for $1500. And paid too much for labor.

Had many conversations with folks and found out that ZF fans recommend a logical fluid replacement scheme vs “lifetime”.
What dod you pay for the labor to swap out the tranny?

@Planerdude Did they perform the rebuild yet? My wife's 20 Rubicon had the same error as yours and has been in the shop for 2 months. They authorized a replacement transmission but now are going to do the rebuild like yours. The service advisor and tech are not happy about this at all, the tech is getting screwed on warranty hours to perform this and he's never opened one before.

Im in week 3 at the dealership. The parts kit arrived on Monday, but now there are couple of “speciality tools” that they say they need to do the teardown.🙈 starting to look like we are the guinea pigs of this new procedure🤯🤯🤯

A smart dealer out sources the tranny rebuild to a specialty shop, there is to much overhead risk.

you do have a choice but it has risks.

You take your jeep to a private trans shop have them do the repair, you pay for it and submit the invoice to Jeep for reimbursement and Prey.

If you are worried about it - you can buy an extended warranty before your factory warranty runs out. IMO the 8 speed transmission failures are pretty rare and i wouldn't harp on it to much.

Do they issue TSBs for problems that aren’t at least somewhat common?

You can get reimbursement from Jeep if you paid a dealer to do repairs that should have been covered under warranty.

Work done at an independent shop is only covered if it is authorized in advance by Jeep or the Dealer.

Reimbursement is possible for Emergency situations, and is handled on a case-by-case basis.

You always have the choice to use an independent shop instead of the dealer. Just don't expect Jeep to pay if it is your decision to do so. Jeep also may possibly refuse any future warranty repairs on the components serviced.

The idea of a tech opening up the ZF rather than a new unit is astounding. Jeep has obviously been having some issues and is not getting ZF to kick back to Jeep the costs of replacement. To say it better, ZF has apparently told Jeep it is not ZF’s fault and that Jeep did something wrong so ZF won’t eat the costs. Therefore, Jeep makes the dealers eat the cost, along with us as owners. :headbang:

Why would ZF be eating the cost? The 850RE may be a ZF design, but the units in the JT/JL are made under license in a Stellantis facility. Any issues, other than a proven design flaw, are on Stellantis to deal with.
