Unless something has changed, the only transfer case settings on the Gladiator are, 2H, 4H, N, 4L. There is plenty of information on how to use the 4WD system starting on page 290. I agree that the dealer should have given you a better demonstration of this!
I think this 4WD system is only available on the Overland model. All other models use the 4WD Part time and should NOT be used on any surface with good traction such as a dry road/pavement and only used where the wheels have the ability to slip such as mud, dirt, snow, etc.
@SandSurfer as @bhbdvm notes, the Overland comes with a different transfer case. Here's a picture of my shifter showing the two 4H modes.

I have an Overland, but mine has the standard 2H, 4H, N, 4L settings. I also have the Limited Slip Rear End.

I could be wrong, but based on that picture, I would think your first shift would be left to right, not front to back.

Tried to shift out of 2H on the drive this morning, and I could not get the stick to move at all. I've read that it is stiff at first, but wow I was afraid to pull any harder.
I'm always rolling when shifting into 4H. Just make sure your foot is off of the gas pedal, and give her a good swift tank. Not sure about the "auto" tho

Is there a 2H at the top of that knob that we can't see because of the glare. I'm assuming like this one:

Jeep Gladiator Newbie Question - 4WD Auto / Part-Time Captur

Description (FROM A JL Sahara):
The new Selec-Trac® III Full-Time Four-Wheel-Drive System includes a 2.72:1 low range. This two-speed, active full-time system includes a 4H AUTO mode that requires no driver input for any driving conditions. In 4H AUTO, 4WD is automatically engaged and disengaged as needed to maintain traction.

However I did not know that was an option on the Gladiator...and I haven't found how to spec that in the online build.

I’ve an Overland with limited-slip rear diff.

Is this 4H/4L AUTO/PART TIME a new option?

I tried a few builds online and none of them are showing that T-case...new option or could they possibly have made a mistake?

As shown in the next quote below, the 2H in my photo was obscured by the reflection. Mine is as shown below. So, the shift between 2H and 4H is front to back.

Yes, my knob is as shown in your attached photo. But as indicated below.....

It is entirely a possibility that they put the wrong knob on this thing, right? I'm attaching a screenshot of my Window Sticker. I was assuming that the "Command-Track Part-Time 4WD System" was the difference here but maybe not?

That's strange. It must be the wrong knob unless they really screwed up. What does your gauge cluster show? It should have the same pattern if you truly have the AWD option?

Good point!

I would absolutely take this back to the dealer and ask. Be sure to ask someone that KNOWS like a mechanic and not the salesperson. Some Jeep salespeople know them inside and out...others...not so much.

Seems like you sir...own a Unicorn! ;)

The cluster only shows the standard 2H-4H-N-4L. I took it out and pulled a muscle in my arm getting it to shift to 4H but it did work. And in that position, moving the knob to the right did nothing, it just sprung back to the left. So, looks like I got the wrong cap on my shift knob.

And so, going back to my OP, I see now that I wasn't crazy after all!

As @Mr._Bill said previously you need to be in Neutral and in motion and Neutral to switch that to 4H and it should switch easily - but it is bizarre that you got a diff cap on that shifter LOL

Heh, I've been focusing on the Rubi for options but knew that 4Hi auto was an option on the Sahara. Guess they didn't carry that over to the Overland. I bet if you take it in to the dealer they can swap out your knob, or keep it as a random little fluke, lol.

I too thought something was wrong with my xfer case or shifter at first as it was really difficult to shift out of 2H for the first time. But it's very easy now, so they do break in.

Never heard of a 4H Auto option on any Gladiator before now....
