They want column shift so the center console can be used for radios, weapon locks, and laptop mounts.
Traditionally, yes. But most shifters nowadays aren't mechanical linkages, they're switches. So relocating to the column shouldn't be that hard.

When they abandoned the police market they lost tens of millions in annual revenue. There's no reason why the Durango couldn't have been competition for the Explorer.

The actual remnants of Chysler before corporate buyouts and failed marriages could theoretically operate independently if they had the funding.

I wonder if Tesla outfits the Model Y some police use in their fleets with a column shift. I know the publicly sold Y has a screen mounted "transmission" mechanism. I suppose if the main goal is to keep space freed up in the center then it's not really a requirement to have a column shifter as much as having enough room to mount all the gear: a screen mounted transmission gear selector would fulfill that.

AFAIK, Tesla does not directly make a Police model vehicle. They all seem to be third party conversion companies making them.

Ugh, just read that Tavares will be hanging around on the Stellantis board after he leaves as CEO. Greeeeeeat. Why does the board keep this guy around? I mean does he have leverage over Elkann or something? Otherwise the message is that they think he’s doing/done a good job.
