Any advice on Trail Grappler vs Patagonia for Daily Driving / Overlanding / Trails / no serious rock crawling.

2023 Rubicon Diesel will get lots of highway miles going to offroad locations and i live in Florida so I need good wet road handling that is fairly quiet.

I like the look of the wider profiles 13.50 and 15.50 and will most likely be on 20x12 wheels and 2.5-3.5 lift

Also am iI making a mistake not considering the Nitto Ridge Grappler?

Thanks!

Honestly, I would advise against any mud tire for a daily driver. They're typically more expensive, wear out quicker and are loud on the highway. I can't speak to the patagonia, but I ran Trail Grapplers on my JK. They were awesome off-road, but they weren't the quietest and most comfortable on the highway. I had Ridge Grapplers on my Tacoma for a while. They were definitely quieter on road, but I wasn't super impressed with how they performed off-road.

I would not rule out a good all-terrain tire for your purposes. We run BFGoodrich KO2s on a lot of work trucks and they're awesome. I've also been pretty impressed with the Falken WildPeak AT3Ws so far.

Between the 2 mud tires the pats are gonna be quieter on road due to their center section. Probably be better for rain too but off road is where the nittos will reign. Pats are a crown tire meaning you will have to keep more air in them to ride on that center section, possibly making them feel more floaty while driving. Both are gonna wear fast regardless.
The ridge grapplers are a great tire but isn’t gonna be as off road as the mt’s. They will be quieter than both but will handle on road better.
Honestly, good luck with your choice.

I ran 3 full sets of 5 milestar patagonias on my jku….. they are amazing on slick rock. They wear our really fast? 20k miles? (I did drive an exceptionally high amount of miles off road- we lived on the edge of Death Valley, and literally were out wheeling every weekend….)
In saying that- I put 6”+ holes in at least 4 tires. 2 of which were catching rocks wrong driving on dirt roads…..

I don’t think we will ever buy a set again. Maybe with the MT 2’s they are addressing the weak sidewalls?? Then maybe I will consider.

We have moved and are in the PNW where wheeling is completely different. We will most likely put a set of MT’s on a separate set of wheels for weekends where we could benefit. Otherwise- we are will daily All terrains and enjoy the much better wear and quiet ride.
Aesthetics are a factor of jeeps. Lots of people build badass jeeps and do not really use them as their parts would portray…. ??‍♂ It is what it is.
For me- I’m not going to drop $2k+ on rubber for the sole justification of looks.
function over form… that’s me- that’s my opinion.

Personally I would go with the ridge grapplers or the Baja boss AT’s

Currently running 37x12.50r17 Pats MT. I commute 70 miles roundtrip (mostly highway) a day and they are very comfortable. Road noise is not any louder than my previous KO2's.

I enjoy them more than I thought I would and have been quite impressed. A thing to note is they are a crowned tire so running a higher PSI will prevent odd wear, mine are 33-34 PSI cold. I'm currently over 10k miles in on these and they barely have any wear. I do rotate them every 3k.

Edit: While it's mostly on road driving, I do light trails and overlanding and these have worked perfectly fine. I don't do hardcore crawling so I can't give an opinion to their abilities in that aspect.

Great note about the crowned tire. Something to add to this- these tires really “need” a wider than OEM wheel 8.5” is ideal. You can squeeze them on a factory 7.5. Poor man’s bead locks- ram a set like this and could drop to 8-10psi and never busted a bead.. however, the tire wear by running a crowned tire with ballooning (too narrow of rim) will cause some awesome tread wear (bad).

I have Nitto Trail Grapplers 37x20 & so far, they have been great. They have a great ride on the highway, minimal road noise. I haven't had any issues in wet conditions, but we don't get much water where I live & last winter, we didn't have much snow.

You have some solid advice about MY VS AT tires. For road riding an AT will generally ride smoother and quieter. Which is better for you depends on what you are looking for in your next tire.

I’d do the Nitto Ridge Grapplers for your uses all day long. The Trail Grapplers are a great tire, but for mostly highway, they are not ideal. I have a friend who drives tons of miles.. he put a set of 35 inch Ridge Grapplers on when he bought the truck new and I’ve seen the truck weekly.. he got 99k miles out of them on a Ram 3500 mega cab. No shit…
Personally, I’d leave the Patagonias in the tire shop.. not even a consideration for me.

The Patagonias are great. I had them on a JKUR, JTUR, and just put a set of the 37x12.50x17s on my JTR Diesel. There is a new Patagonia M/T-02 that is supposed to be a bit better wear and better on wet and dry pavement.

Personally have had Grapplers (twice); after 5k miles I found they sucked in rain.

Won't be going to grapplers again.

They also sucked in snow when they started to wear after 15k.

I'm probably biased. A lot of people love them.

if you are considering the Ridge Grapplers for a daily go ahead and get them, I’d be surprised if you were even slightly disappointed in them. they are a great looking tire that seems to fit exactly what you are looking for. I’m on my second set on the JLUR and the first one had over 60k miles on them.
