I'm not sure how much you will really gain with moving the spare, the rear hitch sticks out farther and hangs down more. I've scraped up my hitch slider, but I don't think I've ever hit my spare.
Well I hear every inch counts 🤣 . It does help alot on large step downs. I have drug the spare early on when I was learning to wheel. I'm just a fan of removing as many potential hang points as reasonably possible.

What size spare do you have? Mine sits up above the hitch, so even on step-downs the hitch is what hits.

It's an old picture but I'm fairly certain that spare is lower than the reciever.

Weather can certainly be a challenge. When will you be there?
Oct 17th - 22!

Hitch slide advice and much of the other advice in this thread is spot on as well. Gladiators will drag unless you have 40s. Wranglers fair better.

Driving in follow the river to Moab on 128, gps usually takes you by the airport on 191. They filmed Horizon in the area of 128.
On 128, Onion Creek is a nice easy trail, not technical but the scenery is good. Its probably out and back that time of year. Also Dome Plateau Overlook is an option in that area.

West Valley Jeep road in Arches NP is an option. Takes a while.

Fins was not too bad, hitch skid took a beating. Watch which option you take.

A nice loop is Moab to Long Canyon to Shafer Trail to Potash Rd back to Moab

Other side attractions
Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite
Pictographs everywhere on Potash Rd.
Black Dragon and Goblin Valley are a daytrip away but I think worth it.

All of these I have done with a stock JTR on 33's

Make sure you have an app like Gaia/Avensa/onX and download the maps. Practice before you go.

You might have to avoid 70 (traffic/construction/weather), Going there or back by Great Sand Dunes / Medano Pass could be a fun camping option if the pass is still open. If not still a lot of BLM options in that area.

Last April we did at 3 week trip to Vegas, Sand Hollow and Moab.
We where amassed at the beauty in Moab.
5 days in Moab is not enough time to explore the area. (Two travel days and one rain day)
We will be going back next April put this time 4 weeks on the road and more time in Moab.
This was the first time we spent that much time traveling with the Willys and decided if we are going to do more long trips and trying pack 4 weeks of crap in the Willys we need to make a change.
When we got back I replace my Tundra work truck with a 2020 F250 and a goose neck trailer.
We leave today for a test run to Murphys Ca. for 5 days and see how every thing going to work or not work.
I cant stop thing about my next trip to Moab.

The 128 hwy should be a great drive. Onion Creek is a solid recommendation as well.

I would also recommend the Long Canyon route above but make sure you stop at Dead Horse Point while you're up on top of the mesa.

I have at least 30-35 days in Moab with my JT deezel on 38" tires running a 37" spare in the stock location. I drag the hitch and the belly on Poison Spider, Metal Masher, Hells Revenge trails. I try to keep the JT for 6 and lesser rated trails.

I suggest doing Potash-Shafer-Long Canyon instead of the other way around. The views down Long Canyon are amazing.
7-Mile is also a great trail because you can pick how hard you want it to be and the views are great. You can change how you exit as well. There are a bunch of different trails that criss cross up on top of the mesa.

The top of Long Canyon can also wash out and have some rocky ledges that are much easier to go down than up.

Looking like we will be there the week of Oct. 21. Should be good times! I normally hit Moab in the spring on 2 wheels, so this will be a bit different. Looking forward to it.

Just got back yesterday. Did a total of 18 days driving from NH and back. First stop was Medano pass and great sand dunes, then redcone, and over to Ouray for Ophir, Engineer and other connecting trails. Did rim rocker from CO to Moab, was totally worth the time. Did Gemini bridges, Fins and things, Hell's Revenge, Chicken corners, Tower Arch, 10 mile trail, and others. Had a great time. It was friggin cold at elevation in CO. 35 degrees one morning, all I had was a usb heated blanket, to put inside my 20 degree bag, but it made it tolerable. We did a mix of dispersed camping and camp grounds. Highly recommend Ridgeway state park just outside of Ouray. Dragged the hitch skid all over hell's...was awesome. I ripped a valve stem off on some unnamed trail up in the cooper ridge area on a steep rocky climb on the edge of a cliff. Thank god for colby valves, was back wheeling in 10 minutes. Highly recommend carrying them. Trip of a lifetime for me. I was moved to tears several times due to the beauty and grandeur of our amazing country.
