I'm currently running the Racing Optics film ... it's a three layer system similar to a tear off system used on helmets. So far I'm pretty impressed ... we were down in Southern Utah a few weeks back and I took a solid rock hit on the drivers side ... no chip or crack.

Replacing a broken windshield is the guarantee of a new crack opportunity.
Or worse… drove with a cracked windshield on my Ram 5.7 Hemi for years… replaced it, and 3months later…. Cam/lifter failure ? made me want to throw a wrench thru it!

but instead I traded it in on my first Jeep! And that’s why I’m here now. ā€˜23 JT Sport S

I purchased my JT off the dealer's lot and it came with the GG option-- not sure if it's helping or not.. but over 8k miles... my windshield has taken several hits-- but no chips yet. (I'll be sure to knock on the gorilla glass next time I'm next to it, just before hopping in the driver's seat.)

Someone else more educated on GG than me will surely pipe in but I believe the "GG laminate" is actually on the inside of the glass and really meant to keep it from shattering, even though the marketing implies it prevents chips and cracks. There's several threads about it and many have found that it wasn't holding up a lot better than the stock glass.

But again, I have no dog in that fight and am woefully ignorant about GG's pros/cons. My statemetn above is purely anecdotal.

And yet you are so there with that statement.
Yes, it's the layer in the cabin that is GG.
The outer layer is still soda lime glass with the same later in the center making a sandwich.
Marketing blows the real number a bit high - well, it's marketing!
The actual stats are - it can (not WILL) reduce chips by 60% because of the energy absorbing properties of the sandwich.
Many of the cracks we see (most) start out as a chip - even if it cracks when the rock hits, there's a chip that started it all.
I have some chips on mine that need to be filled, I better get to calling the company about that, but I replaced the windshield twice on my 2020 - once within a year of buying it, the second time right after i made an agreement to trade it on a 2022. Both were chips first - the first one was so small you had to really clean the glass perfectly clear and shine a light to see it, the other was a larger chip and a big SMACK when it hit up high near the ACC/FCW stuff. In fact you couldn't see it from inside the vehicle.

This is old, they say it's "experimental" but Ford started using it pretty quickly in some of their vehicles.

By the way, I'm not sure why they shot that bearing out at over 100 mph. Unless you drive your Jeep that fast, a rock will not hit you at 100 mph.
That's a fact.
The vehicle ahead of you in your lane isn't "throwing it at you" at 65+ mph. It's lifting it and the momentum of that rock is actually forward, with that other car or truck.
YOU ran into it, it wasn't thrown back at you.
The speed of the rock relative to the pavement is almost nothing, It's a vertical lift the other vehicle's tire gives it.

Some science-
A tire is a rolling object, thus every point along the tire is moving forwards. There is no force going in a backwards direction. The only direction part of a rolling object can go is a combination of up or down, and forward.

The velocity of the rock at any given point can be found by adding it's translational velocity at the center of mass (the orange arrow) with it's rotational velocity.

Vrock= Vcenter of mass + Wrock Where V is the translational velocity, and W is the angular velocity

This can be simplified to Vrock=WDR Where D is the distance from the road at the point of contact in terms of R, the Radius. That is to say, that the velocity at the top of the tire would be Vrock=W(2R) =2Vcenter
The rock at the top of the tire may be going twice as fast as car itself. Similarly, at the point of contact of with the road, the velocity of the rock is 0.

So this leaves one to ask, how do those pesky rocks get thrown at a windshield? If it is hit by the following car, then it is because the rock was thrown somewhat vertically, slowed down by air resistance and the car behind it ran into the rock.

It can also be hit by a car going in the opposite direction. The magnitude of this "collision" will be greater because it involves objects going in opposing directions. This is why the worse rock chips are often from cars going in the opposite direction.

unless that rock came from the other lane where traffic is coming at you, that rock hit your windshield with a velocity roughly the same as that you were travelling. If you were going 70, then that's the hit speed, roughly speaking. Not double that.

Yep, I thought I'd throw it out there, though... GG, no chips or cracks after over 8k miles!
(I wouldn't have ordered it had it not been on the vehicle already--- but, I can't complain!)

I have GG, it came with the truck and so far with almost 8K no cracks or chips. I have taken some very loud and hard hits and so far zero damage. I am knocking on wood at this point but it seems to be a better glass than I have in my F-350. I have had 6 windows in that and it seems like some of them were light hits. Hope that my luck holds out!
