I took my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon for an oil change at the dealership. It is one year old and 10,000 miles. I bought it new and I love it. Not long after getting the oil change and leaving the dealership I end up with smoke coming from the engine and the dash lights coming on, first the oil, then the battery light. I got it to the dealership and The dealer is blaming it on a faulty oil filter and showed me a broker rubber ring from the filter. The problem is oil blew all over the engine. Oil got into the alternator, they cannot get the battery light to turn off and according to them there is now a "knock" in the engine. This happened on Friday. They gave me a loaner and now its Wednesday. I am starting to panic. Can this engine be saved and if not, what are my options or legal rights? I'm calling tomorrow for an update, but my fear is this engine is either irreparable or am I looking at constant future problems and should wait a few months and trade it? Any thoughts or advice.

It doesn't matter what caused it, the dealer did the work and is responsible to fix it. Wait and see what they offer as a solution. They may take care of it, or you may need to get Jeep involved, or possibly hire an attorney. I would send a private message to @JeepCares and let them know what happened and see if they have anything to offer.

Don't forget possible depreciation due to this work on Carfax.

Not sure how a faulty filter blowing oil across the engine can cause a knock unless it shot all the oil out and it had no oil pressure.......

Why is this always brought up? Most people could care less if it’s repaired correctly. Assumption normally is if a dealer does it that will be the case. Also, this assumes carfax shows anything accurate…

He was being sarcastic and beating others who would be SERIOUS to the punch. He's clowning around.
A few worship CF while others believe CF is a god that sees and knows all.

Easy, it had a drop in oil pressure (cam bearings, main bearings and rod bearings all got toasted, hence the knock)......the motor is fucked. They F'd up, now they have to fix it.

It had to be bad............ and I'm surprised these didn't detect and warn of the lack of pressure. Like - no red light? No CEL for oil pressure loss?

Hell, even my 73 would tell me if I lost oil pressure before any damage was done. (I am a former tech so know how it all works - but no warning??)

Another wonderful job from a stealership. Sorry to hear your gladiator, if all fails, sue the dealership for it!

Yeah he said the oil light came on. Could the tech: 1) put the O ring on wrong; 2) over tightened the cap; or 3) both? It’s only supposed to be 20nm I think.

And probably fire the tech if it was his doing.
