Plastic or aluminum? How did it go? It’s on my proactive list.
In my experience (via a close friend) its all about the o-rings. Be careful that the surfaces are clean and the o-rings / gaskets do not get damaged.

The rest is making sure you have enough clamps to clamp off all the hoses, or a lot of shop towels 😂

Thanks. How many hoses? I have three, maybe four hose clamp/kink pliers. I had a super fun diesel fuel filter change on our tractor recently, that lead me to rush out and buy some. My overalls will never be the same. :)

Bad memory.

Actually only one hose at the back it appears.

And I led the other fella astray. I forgot about the fuel rails. So - there is a fair bit of disassembly to get down to it, and then you're working in a confined space once you get to the bottom.

Is it worth doing in advance of problems? $1400 quoted.
I would not unless I was going that deep for another issue or maintenance. The best advice I would give is to not torque ( over torque) the oil filter cap.

I have a few VW TDI engines that have hundreds of thousands of miles with the original plastic cap and o-ring. Yet on the VW forums you hear people complaining of cracked plastic caps and bitch about them being plastic. In reality, someone is using an ungodly amount of torque to lock it down. It is only to be hand tight. The o-ring seals it. Tightening does nothing but break plastic. This is the same concept on the Gladiator 3.6l oil filter cap. The o-ring seals it. It does back off. The o-ring and the threads do a good job of holding it.

I do my own oil changes since discovering that my dealer service department torqued the oil pan drain plug so tight that I had to use a bolt extractor to remove it and replace the now destroyed plug with new. They also way over tightened the filter cap to a point that I’m surprised they didn’t crack the plastic on the housing. Inexcusable work for a Jeep dealer service department.
Those kids!

I’d have trouble looking at the orange filter cap, but I’d get over it. :).

Agreed on all counts, except the fact that I replace the o ring every time.

I’ve been down to the lower intake twice, but haven’t removed it. The o rings and intake ports were immediately covered with delicate painters tape. And I was very careful putting it back in.

Whoops. I replace it every third time.

Sometimes 😬

This last time I didn't feel like going to get a hook to slide it off, so I just gave it a visual check, wiped a little oil around it, and sent it back in for another tour of duty.

I do too as a hardened o-ring could allow the cap to loosen or allow it to leak. I was referring to my TDI engines. It has two o-rings. Sometimes the new o-ings are hard as a rock ( new old stock). I would use the old oring.

That’s definitely different. And common sense is always the way to go.

I just use my hands, but I’m messy.

I do oil changes with nitrile gloves on - but my lil bitch hands aren't good at popping the o-ring out without assistance 😂

I can’t get used to gloves, for that reason. I can’t get the right feel for anything. So I just deal with black fingernails for a month, or perpetually. I’m already married. Black fingernails are in the prenup. Ha ha. As if she’d sign one of those. Not that I’d ask.
