Looks pretty significant. Need to get under it and see whats up
Oil is like blood. It doesn’t take much to look like that. It crawls/wicks.

On a diesel, your oil will look like that after 50-100 miles or possibly less. I still can’t wrap my head around the required oil not being diesel specific.

Did you have a filter change just before this? Looks like during the change a mess was made and the remnants dripped down to the surface, and any residual laying in the crevices heated up and dripped down. My first WAVE change looked like that and I had a friggin shouting match at the dealership to go clean the shit up. Useless, dont give a shit workers at the dealership. Changed to another place and its been night and day

Same for me, first Jeep Wave oil change was a complete mess. My truck was dripping oil for a week even after cleaning up as best I could reach.

Im guessing it was a few ounces. Its only been about 5k miles since my last change and I have 43% left on my oil life monitor.

Got it back from my freebie oil change and they said it was the oil filter housing. His guess was it just got cold enough to make the plastic shrink enough to let some oil by. They also had a JL Ecodiesel there with the same issue and said they could only replicate it first thing in the morning after a cold night. He mentioned that the JL leaked a lot more than mine did.

I’m glad yours was fixed.

in my Promaster group, there are many instances of failure of seals around the oil cooler. And the recommendation is that if your seals leak necessitating removal of the intake manifold to repair, at the same time replace the OEM plastic oil cooler (really just a heat exchanger between oil and coolant since it serves to warm the oil during start up) with an aluminum oil cooler from Dorman.

Here is a tip for all - stupid simple but you might not think about it: In trauma medicine and surgery it can be vital to estimate blood loss accurately. Because, like oil, eyeballing a puddle is deceptive, you take some gauze/paper towel/shop rag etc. and soak up the liquid in question. Now with a graduated container wet a duplicate quantity of whatever absorbent material you used with water to a near saturation point. Now you have the control (H2O) with known volume of liquid to compare against the test (unknown quantity of liquid).

Blood is a lot like oil being a viscous opaque liquid, it doesn't take much to look like a murder scene when in reality actual loss is relatively minor. Following the outlined technique, you can empirically establish whether the apparent bloodbath follows from 30cc of blood or a full pint. Saying this with experience having been elbow deep in sangre.

Sounds like what I've been saying when people ask "is my differential in danger of being low"? when they see a wet area around the right rear wheel.
No, that's likely not even an ounce.........
I have CC'd heads, and then working in plating, I have such a small operation that the chemist advises me to skip the measuring in ounces in a cup and use a syringe and measure the CC.
A tiny spill goes a very long way - and it's worse with oil, IMO, because it makes things look wet, shiny and dark with only enough to make your finger damp.

A fine mist of hot oil carried by the winds of the highway, or a radiator fan, can make a lot of stuff "wet".

And I wonder how many people recall the drip oilers of equipment, or of engines 100 years ago, where a single drop of oil spread over the bore of an engine and lubricated that piston until another single drop fell.

I dunno about the amount of blood - on the CSI shows they can glance at a pool and tell you how much blood was lost.

Have you had this issue since? I had a similar oil spew on Sunday and am pretty concerned about it. There was a decent amount of oil in the driveway. Did they fix anything or just state their hypothesis? Even if it was the cold morning that caused this it is not something I'd like to happen regularly here in colorado nor something I want to have to clean up every cold day.

No it has not happened since. We had a pretty cold November when this happened but it has hit single digits and there has been no problem.

They just did their service and replaced the O-ring along with the filter and told me thats what it was. Seems like an odd fluke to me...

Looks like I’m having a similar issue. I’m in SoCal so it can’t be cold temperature related. Barely gets to 40s at night. I need to take it in. I see the filter housing has a specific torque spec on it. I wonder if they even bothered to torque it (Or if it makes a difference).
