He's right, but often the ride and handling will be better with brackets because the longer lower arms will be swinging more up and own instead of in an arc up/back and down/forward. It's more stable, and transfers less shock to the frame itself.
Control arms swing in an arc and the more off-level they are, the more that arc is forward and backward.
Brackets correct for that, keeping closer to the design parameters of the suspension.
Imagine pushing a wheel barrow and you hit a bump or a rock - the lower your arms are, keeping the frame of the wheel barrow level, the less of a jolt it is and the thing goes up and over. Raise your arms so you raise the handles of the wheel barrow, and now you are pushing downward and the bump or rock will be more of a jolt.

Necessary to achieve caster?
No, they are not.
But for me, I'd do them in a heartbeat if I had more than a 2" lift. I like my near-perfect Overland ride and handling.
It's your choice........

They said it’s right in line as long as it’s not pulling. It drives perfectly straight. Not sure what to fix

From my experience ,Just do a set of Rancho Geo brackets for now .They give you 3 settings for caster . You want as close to 6* as you can get .When money is available go with a set of Metalcloak lower front control arms and track bar . Get rid of the OE because of the soft Clevite bushings . Geo brackets are cheaper than a GOOD set of adjustable control arms and will do more for you initially ( been there ) . All said and done with that little of a lift their is nothing you can use for an excuse for it not driving as good as it once did . no compromise needed
