Any updates on how the Jeep performed on the trip with the new actuator?

Made it from MN to Chattanooga,TN fault free. Previously, I would have had a dozen or more faults by now. Its nearly safe to call the new actuator a fix. Wahoo!

On an unrelated matter, I have been dealing with runaway overheating which had never previously happened. The coolant temp will skyrocket to the max, sometimes without warning. I pull over and it drops within seconds. I'm gonna do a thermostat replacement in the parking lot this morning :headbang:. Hopefully that fixes it

Is it giving you any codes when it spikes. Reason I ask is I was having trouble with the engine coolant temperature sensor.

No codes. Just redlining coolant temp. Did your coolant temp sensor fail?

Luckily, the thermostat replacement is simple and it is finished. I hope that's all it was ...

It sounds like all of the 2020 EcoDiesels had the older 797862-0050 actuator. For whatever reason, the part was discontinued and replaced with a new part.

Those of us with 2020 EcoDiesels (Rams and Jeeps) are not having the P00AF code. And you just replaced your failed actuator with a remanufactured 797862-0050 actuator and everything works!

The good news is that I have no problems with my 2020 Ram EcoDiesel which tows all the time. But I'm now curious about my 2023 Jeep Gladiator. So far, all turbo failures that I've seen have been 2021 and 2022 models.

Mzflorida (2022 Ram) 20,500 miles
Josh Nolt (2022 Ram) 20,000 miles
EC0RAM (2022 Ram) 33,000 miles
Rob Rusk (2021 Ram) 34,000 miles
ruskracing (2021 Ram) 34,000 miles
ecodiesel13 (2021 Ram) 41,000 miles
otinchon (2022 Ram) 56,068 miles

Very sudden spikes and dropping back to normal is a classic symptom of air pockets in the cooling system. Be sure to burp it well and look for leaks.

@DC3 to be clear, just by replacing your actuator to the 0072 revision, the issue appears resolved? No PCM updates, just straight swap of the actuators? What about the actuator control arms that connect to the turbo vanes, any physical differences like length there? And the only way currently to obtain the 0072 revision is by purchasing an entire turbocharger assembly P/N: 68602174AA ? How has your FL trip been the rest of the way? What a great test. Wonder what is different with the new Garrett turbocharger P/N.

Thank you for doing all of this homework! I was hoping to be able to just swap the actuator with the new revision to avoid having the dealer pull the cab off for an entire replacement turbo. I think the turbo is fine, it’s just something electrical in the actuator itself. The code tripping issue was probably either ignored or the parameters changed in the new firmware revision. Too bad we cannot just write the revision to the 0050 version. But hey, if all I have to do is purchase a new actuator (even if with a new turbo I don’t need right now) and avoid having to pull the cab, I am beyond grateful!! I have a lot of Overlanding wiring, etc I did before I even knew about this issue that I really don’t want to have to undo and redo again from a cab lift.

@biodiesel heads up, I think you may have the revisions wrong here and on the Ram forum. From my interpretation FWIW, DC3 swapped his revision 0050 actuator to 0072 and has not seen the issue thus far using the latest 0072 revision. Sounds like he originally ordered another 0050 as a spare before he learned there was a 0072 version. I asked for further clarification directly from DC3 here on this thread so we will see what he says. Perhaps my understanding is wrong. I do agree with you that this likely points to some QC issue for a run of the 0050 revisions.

Once I hear back from DC3, I am looking to do a controlled experiment getting the code to happen on the 0050 version, then driving in the exact same conditions/area using the 0072 revision to confirm. Before I drop $1k on a new turbo just to get the silly actuator, I want to be sure I understand what DC3 did exactly. I have a 2021 Glad with around 16k miles when it first happened.

21 with 48k miles, code tripped last year while towing in Colorado mountains. Today Northern Il, 68 degreees but driving into 30 mph winds with gusts. big gust, saw egt’s spike on banks scan gauge to 1500 degrees and got the code again. Cleared and went on my way, oil temps 240‘s. Gonna do the replace and fab a heat shield for it, I’m considering getting a piece of Inconel, I’m from the road racing world

On the last leg of my trip, I experienced the P00AF 1 time. It was weird because it occurred during light load conditions and I wasn't datalogging so I am unable to diagnose the situation. I data logged the rest of the day and pushed it hard but wasn't able to get the error to reocurre. My PCM has not had the latest software revision associated to the P00AF TSB, there might be software updates to relax the sensitivity?

In any case, the replacement actuator resulted in a massive improvement on my trip. I would have typically seen the error many times (20+) on this trip

I will datalog the drive home this week and provide updates.

At this point, I don't know if the 0072 vs the 0050 is the solution. I haven't opened the 0072 but based on the feedback from the Polish actuator rebuilder, the 0072 and 0050 are interchangeable. Which to me means a good 0050 actuator will perform the same as a 0072. It might be as simple as the 0072 is the corresponding part number to the latest Garrett turbo revision. I have spent hours researching using Chatgpt and traditional web scouring without a clear answer.

I plan to open the 0072 actuator at some point but it wont be for a short while. If it were me, I would purchase a rebuilt 0050 before purchasing a replacement turbo to get the 0072 actuator because it's a cheap and quick first attempt.

@DC3 thank you so much for the detailed update. I am sad to hear you experienced the code again. I do wonder if the PCM update in conjunction with the 0072 actuator is the ticket. Unfortunately that blows out any tunes to do the PCM update. I do feel like you are onto something here with the actuator though. Man I hope we can figure this out. I really don’t want to lift the cab off… Let me know if I can help. Thanks for all of your continued efforts. Looking forward to updates. Safe travels.

I ordered the polish 0050 actuator and installed. So far so good, but haven’t had the chance to push it with a trailer yet. The install was easy. Use locking needle nose on the c-clip thingy on the rod, or be prepared for an extra trip to the hardware store 😂

boost numbers seem to have dropped a lot from where they were, but I wasn’t logging before

Has your boost settled back to the previous normal?
