Experienced my first derated recently going from Ely to Utah due to heat soaped. I usually leave it idling when stopped for a quick cigarette break, but forgot to do it this time. Pulled back on to the highway and it wouldn’t go more than 35mph. Boost gauge indicated 4 psi with the gas pedal nearly to the floor.
Yeah, it's good to let the truck idle to cool the engine and turbo. I let my truck idle for about 5 minutes after working it hard, especially in hot ambient temps. The Jeeps are much worse due to the tight engine bay.

That's correct. The EcoDiesel uses a Variable Geometry Turbocharger which is controlled by the actuator. The actuator adjusts the internal vanes to manage boost and efficiency. A wastegate is a bypass valve that vents exhaust to manage boost. A VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) replaces the need for a wastegate.
Does the VGT get sooted up? Is this what is causing the code? We had a way to disassemble the VNT on the Bosch turbo to clean it up. I'm about 50/50 on a success rate. Have you had a VGT apart?

We've been told that some actuators are bad, but FCA hasn't given us any details to why they are bad. Soot isn't the issue, though. I would guess it's a quality control issue.

My 2020 Ram EcoDiesel has been a designated tow rig since buying it new and I haven't had any issues with the turbo. For reference, I've towed a 7,000 lb. travel trailer over 4,000 miles in the last month including mountain passes with no issues. My truck now has over 62,000 miles on it. Some of these trucks with P00AF codes had the turbo replaced as early as 20,000 miles.

I haven't seen a 3rd gen EcoDiesel turbo torn apart.

I had something like that happened to me. On a cross country trip. Stopped at a rest stop for a quick pee. Started up and started to pull out on to the highway. It wouldn't go pass 40 mph for about minute. Then it cleared up and took off. I figured it was heat soak. Hasn't done it since.

My ram 1500 never has had this problem. I pull a 28’ offshore boat with it all over. 18’ box trailer.
But
It was deleted at 20 thousand miles
If I can get the jeep to throw the code again. It’s going to a Steeler ship to be replaced.

Check your Upper intake Charge Tube, mine threw this code on a long road trip through the West Virginia mountains. Then 2 weeks later the Charge tube had a blowout.

When that tube ruptures, you'll get P0106 and P04DA codes, it will prevent the truck from accelerating and force you to pull over.

Edit... P0299

You either get a good turbo or a faulty turbo. The failure rate is small enough that Stellantis didn't issue a voluntary recall.

The Old Fort Mountain grade is your ticket!

I would sure like to get it changed on warranty before delete it.

Agreed, especially if you can find a competent dealer. I live in diesel country, so our dealerships have really good diesel techs plus there are 7 of them.

Only risk is cap off replacement. Who knows what will get properly reinstalled.
