Let's do basic math:

15,000 miles per year/22 MPG = 682 gallons of diesel @ 3.01/gallon = $2,053 annually

15,000 miles per year/19 MPG = 789 gallons of gasoline @ 2.62/gallon = $2,067 annually

EcoDiesel is +$14 annually at this point

Then:

EcoDiesel oil change = 2 jugs @ $20/ea = $40 + Mopar fuel and oil filter = $95 x twice annually = $270

Pentastar oil change = 1 jug @ $20 = $20 + Mopar oil filter @ $10 = $30 x twice annually = $60

EcoDiesel is now -$196 per year

Then:

Upfront cost of EcoDiesel $5,000 / 7 years (average ownership length of a new car in the U.S.) = $714 annually

EcoDiesel is now -$910 annually
DEF...don't forget the DEF = $100-ish yearly depending on how much the new engine will use it per mile
3.0L EcoDiesel Fuel Filter Water Separator Cartridge = $40 + install ($125 if you don't do it yourself) every 10-15k miles

One more thing, my experience coming from a 2015 Ecodiesel GC, the 3.6L in the JT is much, much faster revving, powerful and responsive when passing. Fuel mileage is also about the same.

I think FCA should set the Gladiator EcoDiesel pricing at $2,500 upcharge maximum in order to sell them in high numbers. The problem is that Gladiator is already overpriced in general, so adding large increases for the diesel option will certainly make it out of range for most buyers.
It's a premium package, manufacturers don't discount premium packages to sell more of them, they load them to the front knowing they will sell less.

One one hand, $5000 is a lot of bones...
On the other, a supercharger, for the 3.6, costs about as much.

The Gladiator build I'm considering is MSRP at $56000. So I'm looking at $61000 before any discounts. I still might do it but I'll take another close look at a Raptor before I pull the trigger.

You won't spend that much on DEF. I keep a tight log on my expenses and here's what I spent last year on DEF. Keep in mind that I do more towing than probably 95% of Ecodiesel owners.

2018 Total gallons of diesel fuel: 1,142.22
2018 Total fuel cost of diesel fuel: $3,683.53
2018 Total gallons of DEF: 12.5 gallons
2018 Total Cost of DEF: $39.4

At Walmart, DEF is $7.88 per 2.5 gallon jug.

If you don't mind my asking, how many miles did you put on your truck during this time period..

I'm still ignorant of some of these things. At least you'll be giving me an rough idea of the cost per mile.. Thx..

I would have to go back and look, but I'm estimating that we logged somewhere between 28,000 - 30,000 miles of driving in 2018. We bought the Ecodiesel new in September of 2016. Next month will mark 3 years of ownership. We now have 75,000 miles on the odometer. We've towed the travel trailer through 17 states in those 3 years. Plus, I tow a dump trailer and utility trailer for my side-jobs.

Just for perspective, let me throw in a few arguments. Your 19 mpg vs 22 mpg is the EPA city/highway combined fuel estimates for the 2018 Ram 1500. If you look at the highway estimates for the same truck, the 4WD Ecodiesel is rated for 27 mpg and the 4WD 3.6L is rated for 23 mpg, that is a 4 mpg difference, not the 3 mpg difference in your calculation. Minor detail, but for those who spend most of their time on the highway, that might be something to consider.

Now, if you decide to tune your Ecodiesel, you will see an average of 30 mpg on the highway. With tuning, there is a 7 mpg difference between the Ecodiesel and the 3.6L. I've hand calculated 29.7 on my stock Ecodiesel driving from Gallup, NM to Pratt, KS. That was 662 miles on one fill-up. If I were tuned, I probably would have averaged at least 31 mpg on that same trip.

I'm just wanting a Jeep truck that won't be bogged down when towing in the Rocky Mountains. That's why I want the diesel.

Due to the restricted air flow, the Gladiator Ecodiesel can't tow as much as the Pentastar, but it will tow better than it's gasoline counterpart. There's simply more torque in the lower RPM range. I live at 7,000 feet and tow all over the Rocky Mountain region.

DEF freezes, and in Colorado, 7ºF happens..a lot. If I didn't have an extended warranty, my DEF replacement pump would've cost me $3k out of pocket, because my Wal-Mart DEF froze in its tank and burned out the pump. Not covered under warranty at the time but now, under the diesel settlement, it is.

Your DEF usage is different than mine too. My tank would empty about every 7k miles. So, 15 gallons a year, $45.00 instead of $100.

DEF will freeze at around 12*F, however, frozen DEF should not hinder normal vehicle start-up or operation due to the built-in DEF tank heater. I'm in a colder climate than you are and I've never had a problem. There are Ecodiesels in Michigan and Canada that don't have DEF problems at -20*F. Your DEF pump probably failed due to some other reason than frozen DEF. All DEF is the same regardless of brand, assuming it's certified by the American Petroleum Institute. DEF is a mixture of 67.5% de-ionized water and 32.5% purified urea.

Exactly my reasoning. I was convinced that I either need the diesel or a different vehicle after seeing the Ike towing challenge on TFLTrucks. I’m planning to buy a property out near Breckinridge for camping and eventually building a cabin. The 3.6 won’t cut it unless it has a turbo or super charger. Right now that kind of mod seem problematic on that particular engine.

It failed. $3k. Common problem.

You can argue all you want but the fact is the ROI, for light duty use, isn't there.
