I’ve a 2015 GC Ecodiesel and have had relatively few issues. The biggest issue I have experienced is the DEF and emissions systems. My NOx and DEF pump have been replaced. These were not covered under warranty, but strangely now in the diesel settlement, they are.

Things to consider; the Ecodiesel was designed by VM for European Cadillacs and for passenger cars. Not saying it doesn’t work in trucks or Jeeps but know it wasn’t designed for heavy duty work. It is designed to be quiet and efficient.

I’ve towed with mine and watched the temp gauge rise to the point where my windshield washer hoses and squirters had to be replaced because the heat under the hood baked them brittle to the touch. It runs hot.

Initially, I was going to wait for the Ecodiesel, after living with one for 4 years and 75k miles, I don’t see the ROI. Not saying I wouldn’t want it, but the increased purchase cost and ongoing DEF and more expensive diesel routine maintenance, I passed and bought the 3.6L.

The EcoD is/has been improved for 2019.....supposed to be 2019 but turning into 2020 real quick like
There was a a JL running around in production trim spotted recently so its getting close. I bet you'll see JLs for 2020 MY being delivered in fall.

Possibly. But only news I can find is for the RAM having it on the streets by Fall. Hopefully, Jeep will release in conjunction

Diesel is only found at roughly 55% of U.S. fuel stations. So to say that diesel is "everywhere" is wrong.

I recall a vacation trip from KY to FL that the wife and I made back when I had my Jeep Liberty CRD. On the way home I started getting low on fuel. We frantically searched for diesel along I-65 and I damn near ran out before I finally found a station near the interstate that sold diesel.

I think in head to head towing tests such as the "Ike Gauntlet" that TFL Truck does, folks are going to be shocked when the EcoDiesel takes the same or more time to climb the mountain when compared to the gas V6 offerings in the segment. This is because speed is proportional to horsepower, and the EcoDiesel is low on horsepower. Yes, it'll tow just fine. It just won't do it quickly.

The main issue I have with the EcoDiesel is that it has a history of a high % of engine failures, mainly due to the way the cam sprockets were designed, and also because it apparently uses the Bosch CP4 fuel injection pump which is notoriously unreliable and there've been guys that have spent upward of $10,000 on the repair. Warranty hasn't covered all those repairs, because the manufacturer claims that "poor fuel" caused the seizure of the pump.

It's just a really scary proposition. Parts are twice as expensive, maintenance is twice as expensive, upfront purchase cost is high, and there is the possibility of catastrophic failure prior to 100,000 miles. The low RPM torque is nice, but is it that nice?

If you plan poorly enough you can run out of any type of fuel

... it will most likely not be available in lower trims similar to how it is on the Grand Cherokee...
Hmm this would seem to support the idea...

Not sure what you mean? My stance has been Overland (Sahara) and Rubicon every time this question comes up and your pic supports that.....
Just sayin the pic does support the theory. :like:

It should be noted that it wasn't poor planning, but a lack of diesel fuel stations with the small nozzles that lead to the crisis. I always started looking at 1/4 tank. I never waited for the low fuel light.

I admit I was up in the communist northeast US several years back in my diesel pickup & did find it a bit of a challenge to find auto diesel (meaning diesel fuel available at regular gas stations).

But that was back before cell phones got 'smart' ;)

Drove from Wisconsin to North Carolina in my TDI Golf and never had an issue finding a diesel station. Around here almost every gas station has diesel, but I won't be buying another diesel vehicle. I only drive 4 miles to work and my Golf would never warm up in the winter. I'll stick with lower MPG and be warm when driving to work.
