So, I'm doing some maintenance today and was wondering if the padding under the hood is just for sound deadening? I read somewhere that the engineers tried to make the ecodiesel as quiet and un-diesel like as possible. Personally, I love the sound of a diesel motor and turbo whine.
I did remove the engine cover because I'm weird and like to see all the parts and pieces.
So, removing the under hood padding won't hurt the paint or anything? Might even help the heat issue?

I wish I could help. My previous truck had no padding; most trucks have no padding probably. But that previous truck engine ran cool to the touch, not like this hot little diesel. I guess one approach is to take some hood temp measurements with it in place, remove it and repeat. Probably best to do it now, in summer

It is there as a thermal protection for both the oil burner and the gasser.

If you remove it and develop a hot spot, you WILL see it in the hood.

The only other use aside from sound deadening could be heat retention if you live in some frigid location. I live in CA and have removed it on both JLURs and my JTM for over 120k miles between the 3 and there have been 0 issues. Definitely no ill effects on the paint. The 2019 JLUR had functional hood louvers installed when I removed it at 15k miles and still no issues at 62k+. My mojave scoop was opened up to install a light bar behind it at 200 miles and the insulationwas removed then. 17k miles later and no issues.

Thanks. I read through most of that previously. Don't think anybody said that the padding was there for anything other than sound deadening. Just don't want to pull it then find my hood paint discolored in a few months because of the engine heat.
I pulled mine and took some temp readings. The outer surface of the hood was the same temp in the hot afternoon sun with and without the padding after a daily drive. UV rays will probably beat your paint up more than under hood temps.

I continue to run without the insulation to this day. My jeep is parked in the south Texas sun 95% of the time. I’ve had it like that a year and the paint hasn’t discolored yet

It's on my hood with the 3.6L.
