You learn something new everyday. I wish I learned this sooner though.

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to cars, but I do try to make the effort to learn about them.

Today, I learned you're never suppose to overfill the gas tank. Usually when I fill up at Costco, after I hear the click at the pump, I press the handle one more time to make sure it didn't prematurely stop. Sometimes I may do it 1-3 times to be sure.

I didn't realize that could be bad for the truck.

I've spent the last hour reading on its negative effects, specifically on the evap system.

May I ask:

I've gassed up at least 37 times this year. Did I do significant damage to the Gladiator? I just got back from an Jeep Wave visit a month ago and my truck didn't throw out any codes.

Are modern vehicles less prone to the negative effects of overfilling? Are Gladiators less sensitive to it?

Thanks for your time

Pretty sure it will just go through the evap, worst case, you wasted some money on gas.

You'll be alright man. You guys got to stop being so paranoid on this site. How do you guys sleep at night sometimes.
For real. People on here are like “I almost ran out of gas on my way home and had to fill up at Walmart instead of my normal premium gas station. Did I ruined my engine?”

Wait - what's wrong with Walmart gas?

If what you did was actually "damaging", the streets would be littered with disabled vehicles as far as the eye can see.

Damage ? Uh no.

It you did it 10000 times, I'd say the same thing.

Relax. You will be fine.

Two types,

Those who don't read the Owners Manual and panic.

Those that memorize the Owners Manual and panic.

Relax, you didn't hurt a thing. When gas splashes back out of the fill neck then that is one click too many.

I don't understand why people do that. How many signs are there at gas stations telling you to not do exactly that?

A forum member actually had an issue due to this very thing. I can't find his post, but it did kick a code and damaged the canister.
....But all of the trained mechanics here say it's not a problem, so I guess it must not be........... but then.........

https://www.toyotechs.com/autologic-news/item/107-overfilling-your-gas-tank-is-a-no-no

https://www.gasbuddy.com/go/overfilling-gas-tank

https://www.freep.com/story/life/2015/06/28/dont-top-off-gas-tank-environment/29269833/

And there's plenty more where those came from...........
As I recall that forum member had to have a part replaced and his JT actually threw a code.
He was told it was due to trying to top off the tank and liquid gas getting into the vapor system.

And to anyone believing the dealer will simply replace any canister under warranty - think again. They know what does this, it's on you. Abuse, neglect, doing it wrong - not a manufacturers' defect.

I thought this thread was about the pump itself overfilling the tank, not the person. 4 out of 5 fill-ups if I jam the nozzle as far as I can and use the auto hold thing and just stand back and watch my truck fill with gas, when its full it always disengages the hold open lever then burp out about 1/4 cup of gas all down the side of my truck and on the fender. Different stations, different speeds of fill and even different depth of the nozzle in the filler neck and none of it seems to matter. Fuel always flying out.

well, worst case you flood the canister beyond what it can vaporize and have to replace it but that's well beyond topping off.

Though I have noticed this truck really doesn't like being topped off. I could throw an extra half gallon into my Tacoma every time without issue but more than rounding up at the pump and I'm spilling gas out the nozzle.

I can add 2 gallons after the first auto shut off click. That is almost 10% of the practical tank volume.

Same. I keep a roll of paper towels under my backseat just for this.
