Distracted driving. Botton line.
The diminished value is real. I had the same think happen to me with a Frontier. No real damage but new bumper. Tried to trade it and the dealer knocked $2k off because of the accident on Carfax.
Maybe if you dont have a body shop or insurance involved you may be ok.
If you do involve insurance, you can make a claim against their insurance (or even your own, I think) for "diminished value" (I think that's the term).

One of those things that the insurance folks forget to bring up when you are making claims.

Interesting. I’ve never heard of this either

I got rear ended yesterday and this Jeep is a tank
Body shop looked it over and no frame or structural damage
Hitch checked out but may have their insurance replace that
Some chips on the steel bumper
Mark on Tailgate rubbed out

She hit me at 30 mph with no braking or skid markers

Tthats pretty standard for any steel bumpered SUV or truck VS a sedan actually.

If you had a sport bumper on there you wouldn't of fared so well. Mine was pushed in on one side backing into a rock that barely nudged it. I have a Rubicon Takeoff rear bumper now & there is really no comparison to strength.. Not only does the steel part help, but the sliders being attached back to the frame give it a HUGE amount of extra strength at the corners.

yup. The front end of most vehicles always look way worse than the car/truck they rear ended.
My son had a 1982 SX4 a few years ago. He worked in downtown Des Moines. He was headed home in traffic, waiting his turn to make a left turn and a woman behind him in a car not unlike shown here (a Ford Focus, I think it was) rear-ended him going a fair clip (likely 25-30)

And like this case, her car nosed under his (Eagles sit higher than most cars, hell, higher than most modern SUVs!) and she was not able to drive it away. Right fender was mashed into right front wheel messing that up, hood and rest crumpled about like this accident.

My son's Eagle? Knocked the trim strip off the right end of the bumper. No other damage. I had a spare trim strip to put back on it. I checked his car over, not a thing out of place.
His car sitting up plus the heavy front and rear bumpers that don't like to give - and that are attached firmly and securely to the frame rails hold up pretty well.

Yea. I think it’s the way they design cars nowadays. Sturdy in the back and a cushiony crumple zone in the front.

I'd push to have them pay for a new bumper and diminished value. The rear bumper should be removed to check for mounting bolt/frame damage etc (unlikely)...
