I have been playing around with tire psi and lowering down to 35 which after running on the road they read 37 to 38. It has helped out a lot with the drifting. Also my steering in right there is no play in it. Still up in the air on replacing them or not before our trip in June.

I replaced the stock Mojave Falken Wildpeak AT3 in 285 70 17 with Nitto Ridge Grappler's in a 305 70 17 size about two weeks ago and the ride is much smoother and less jarring over the frost heaves and broken pavement we have up here in Northern AZ. On the way back to the Grand Canyon from Flagstaff yesterday afternoon, my wife commented that whatever I had done with the tires was good and I "better not change it". Like others here, I tried to drop the pressure down to 33 psi on the WildPeaks but they were still very rough (but great on snow and ice).

I have previously tried the Nitto Ridge Grappler, Toyo Open Country ATIII's, BFG KO's, Wrangler MT/Rs and Duratracs on a variety of Landcruisers over the years, and the Nitto Ridge Grapplers have been the best for my combined on-road/off road use so I was hoping they would work well on the Mojave.

I was also surprised that the 1" difference in size between the Falken 285 70 17 and the Nitto 305 70 17 is unnoticeable when accelerating and cruising, and I am still holding 8th gear well, so I have not even changed the tire diameter yet with the Tazer.
Do you happen to have any pics of your set up with the 305/70/17 Ridge Grapplers?

Yeah, I notice on road trips that mine will go from 33-34 psi to 37-38.
I got mine aired down to 34psi cold. My half hour commute to work super early in the morning they settle at 37psi. In the afternoons they’re usually all 39psi once warmed up. I got a comment from somebody at work saying “Looks like you need some air in those tires”. ?

I’m missing if you are talking about the ridge grapplers or the AT3’s….

but I had the MT’s and swapped with AT3’s (buy backjeep with less miles….)

mt’s gained 2-3 psi from cold to running the highway speeds (35-38psi jump).

AT3’s 35psi, jump on the highway for awhile….. 43,44,45psi depending on ambient temperature…. (We are talking Western Washington here…. 70*?? On a summer day…)- crazy… and drives me bonkers.

Running the stock Wildpeak AT’s. Your pressure is jumping up 8-10 psi on just one trip?

So question, Reference all that comes with getting a larger tire, lower miles per gallon, losing 8th gear mostly, and needing a regear to help with all that. What is the main factor to cause this, the weight of the tire, height, width of the new larger tires?

Reason I ask is that MT tire, that is almost 35 inches but a bit narrower then the stock tires, would that help offset some of the things mentioned above? Seems the weight of the tire is about the same at the stock W/P tires.

It’s a combination. Weight and contact patch for mpg. Revolutions per mile, and circumference difference change the torque curve and therefore the transmission tuning changes.
The factory tires are heavy- the wheels are relatively light…. But the tires are heavy. You can probably find a 35 that is pretty close in weight to the stock tire weight… this will help some aspects but doesn’t change the need to reprogram. Jumping to a 35 probably wouldn’t “need” a regear either.

So ambient temp played a roll… air is 35psi when it’s mid 50’s…. 37 when it’s mid 60’s…
Temps varied on the ride home 70’s-80’s and tire pressure got as high as 45psi.
First photo was an hour into the drive… ?‍♂ I’ll snap a photo tomorrow with resting/cold psi.
Speed- 70-80mph…. Mostly at the 70 side.

additional note- I have a canopy, decked system, and for this ride- drivers side had afridge and two Milwaukee pack outs with tools (probably 200??lbs). Passenger side of the bed had a huge blanket and a 60lb Labrador ??- so this is probably why the left and right tire pressures were off a bit.
