Rolling back on a hill you can't climb, put it in neutral, or?

I use 4lo full time, unless it’s a fast dirt road section. 4hi is way harder on your transmission.

I always figured 4Lo would be harder on the system. More force being applied and all that jazz. Now I know.

The transfer case in low range takes so much pressure off the tranny. Plus from a safety standpoint you really want to be able to hit the gas. If you’re carefully backing up and your brakes slip, being able to two foot drive and add some forward motion in 4 low makes it a more controlled maneuver.

Other times it’s the opposite. Slowly descending a downhill obstacle, 4 lo will win over standard brakes. So neutral will actually give you a more controlled descent. But keep your hand ready on the parking brake if you need more.

I personally don’t t like it. It’s all based on abs. It feels pretty jerky.

I’ve been trying to get the wife out every couple weeks to do some easier stuff. Get her used to the feel of rocks and not concrete before we dive headlong into the Devil’s Staircase or anything. Maybe I’ll give that a go some time. We have a good play/training course about an hour away from the house we can use any time we want to.

4lo is also good for speed control and limiting brake use.

Absolutely!!!
On the flatter sections (although, still bumpy), you could sit back and just steer. No gas pedal or braking input needed. The Jeep would crawl along by itself.

I remember a friend of ours had one of the first Rubicons - he’d get out and walk beside the thing when it was crawling along. He kept that Rubicon totally stock and later put an Atlas in it and 32” tires, no lift. The obstacles he conquered with that little Rubi was amazing. He knew how to drive it!

That reminds me of my invention.

A "crawl button" on the key fob
for ranchers and other property owners.

Leave it in drive and use the "crawl button"
to fully engage or disengage
the ABS brakes in crawl mode.

Then a person could get out,
open a gate, crawl through, close the gate
and get back in when solo.

Likewise, a ranch hand single handed
could get in the bed of a truck
and crawl while putting out cubes
or square bales.

And there might be
a rock crawling situation when solo
that it could be handy.

Very true!! Atlas makes a great product too! I won a few turtle races with that sucker in my Rubi.

I wonder why we are all stuck with auto-park when you open the drivers door without your seat belt on... what could go wrong?

I highly recommend watching the following video. It includes some great info including the hill descent control feature (now called "select speed" feature) which works in forward and reverse, and also going up or down a hill. Lot's of other great info for new Jeep owners. Some of it is for Rubicon only models but you can skip those parts.
