can the stock manual side view mirrors be disassembled? I'm sure I can with a grinder and sawzall, but other then destructive disassemble. was thinking of painting them but was wondering if I can take them apart and just paint the forward facing piece.

If you want to paint just the forward-facing piece, maybe you could just buy the covers for that piece they sell on Amazon and paint those covers? I haven't done it, but it seems that would be inexpensive and easy and might look good.

Or masking- whatever happened to that lost art? Painters tape. Then use an air brush or touch-up gun for great control of the paint.

more or less the route I'll be heading. since there was a seam on the mirror I figured I'd ask and see if it could be split.

I thought you could split it, but it needed to be disassembled from the mirror side? As in, remove the mirror first and then remove the guts behind it and eventually you'll be able to get at the mounts holding it together and separate the sides.

Or maybe I'm thinking of a different vehicle.

Would be interesting to see how your project turns out.

Sometimes what seems simple or obvious, isn't. I'm among the many who have thought, hey, no problem................ and then later that day do a search for replacement mirror glass. Dang, if I had taken an extra 30 minutes and done it what I thought originally was the hard way, I'd be avoiding that expense.
Not saying these can't be taken apart - but too often the last part put in place more or less seals it for future disassembly.
I learned the hard way over many years - patience is the key to mirrors.
