So how many of you use the manual shifter on the automatic?

I’ll use it more when I’m on trails requiring 4lo... it works great in conjunction with hill descent control
this is what I do also.

So far I have only used it going down steep hills and helps save on the brakes.
I assume those are pretty long or steep hills - here, I hit the brakes moderately for a second or two and let up and mine downshifts a couple of gears and applies engine braking.
I've not yet used the manual mode really - but might if I were towing a load.

The thing I hate about the manual mode is that it's BACKWARDS. You push the lever forward to upshift on other vehicles, but the Jeep you pull it back. That's just backwards.
My 73 you run through the gears by starting with the floor shift all the way back, run it forward to upshift, pull BACK to DOWNshift.

Forward is up, backward is down - why did Jeep do it backwards?

Needs paddle shifters. The shift gate is offensive. Please ban the designer and all the bean counters involved.
I hate those paddles - I threatened to CUT THEM OFF of my wife's prior GC. UGH - a true sports shifting vehicle has a floor shift you push FORWARD to upshift, pull BACK to downshift.
Maybe a ratchet shifter is needed LOL

It is silly that way...might be better for winter use and off road.

Used it towing on long down hills a couple of times. Little engine braking takes some strain off the brake.

I used it a lot in my JK to save on breaks. I got close to 90K on my front pads. For some reason I just stoped doing this with my JT.

Should get 80-90,000 on brakes anyway. I've gotten that much on almost everything I've owned.

That depends on where you live. I live on a mountain, and use the manual mode daily while descending. If I didn’t, I would only get about 40k on the brake pads. While the shift pattern is opposite most cars, there are some With the same reverse pattern. Once you get used to it, it’s easy. It’s more like a sequential transmission.

Are you saying I'm not special :CWL::CWL:

Heck I thought 60K was the norm. My wife lady gets about 40K. I do pull a trailer quite often. A buddy and I harvest a lot of firewood in the fall and winter and I pull a mower around a few days a week early spring to late fall.

That'll do it............. you're constantly stopping more weight.
if you want firewood, come this way and you can easily fill a truck and trailer multiple times.

TN doesn't count - it's all downhill all directions, even going back, from what I hear. I swear my trip out east was all downhill. And I had no trailer brakes.
