Wife and I are currently speccing out a trailer from Hiker Trailer and I'm not 100% sure on what hitch to put on the trailer.

I have a height adjustable, standard ball hitch already, just wondering if it's worth buying more "stuff".

We won't be doing anything crazy with the trailer, but for sure won't be towed on flat asphalt much

Any input appreciated as always!

We have a smittybilt scout off road trailer, and I initially had that same conflict. We also drive it on severe terrain. Ultimately, I’ve kept it simple with the 2”
Ball coupler and a B and H adjustable height hitch. I just drive it like I understand how balls can pop out. Meaning I go very slowly when there’s a severe dip or crest to go over. I’ve yet to have a problem in two years. I’m not saying the lock n load or max coupler might not be amazing. I’m sure they are. But it was going to be somewhat complicated to get the heights right when the JT hitch height varies a lot depending on load. So I drive it carefully when necessary.

I use a Max Coupler and highly recommend it. Lock n roll is similar. A ball is probably fine but I like knowing mine won’t pop out and won’t tip me over if the trailer goes over.
Do you have any pictures of the setup? My concern is tongue height on mine. My rear is lifted around 4.5”, and I still need a 2” rise as the tongue is so higher if I need any to tow it level. Which I of course do. :)

I have a Lock n Roll on my Tentrax and it's been fine, but that Max Coupler looks like it could be just a little easier to hook up?

This is where I’m at.
I measured my hitch and I’m sat around 20” so in theory I’d need a 4” drop to match their tongue height. But I can’t adjust to fine tune like I can with a ball.

That’s my problem. Just the opposite as I need a rise. I either want level, or just a hair down at the tongue. I hate a trailer that isn’t level. But my ball/hitch height varies with load in the JT enough that the adjustable is helpful. I’ve also had to use the adjustable to get it hitched and unhooked on unlevel ground.

On my JK I had the hitch flipped down but I had to flip it up for the JT. You’ll have to get a hitch with an open hole so you can bolt on the coupler. The trailer end slides into the coupler and a pin secures it. Here’s what mine looks like.

Simple enough. Do you swap back to the 2” ball coupler when you get back to the road?

Nope. This is all I use. There’s no play in it so it tows great. I also use these to keep the connections tight. I get them at my local Uhaul.

I use the bolt lock system on everything, so it would be tough to switch, but I don’t have much of a play problem thankfully.

If you’re not doing this, then a ball might be fine. ?
My first test run with the new Timbren suspension. I hit it. Oops.
The trailer needs 37’s. :)

Had the 2” ball hitch on my Taxa Cricket with my JL and replaced it with the lock n roll. Haven’t towed it yet with Gladiator but expect it will be just as great. Love the lock n roll setup.
