Starter Replacement

Just sharing. I have a 2023 Gladiator Sport S.

Over the last 6 months my push button ignition has been acting up. Every once in a while it took a couple pushes to get the jeep started. Last couple of days, truck actually died at stop lights and took a few tries on the push button to get it going again.

Took it to the dealer assuming it was a battery issue, but they had to replace the starter.

Won't matter a lick if the starter is bad.
You could have two wires to touch together and it would still fail if the starter or relay or battery was bad.

To me, this below implies that it actually died.
And trying the push button to get it started?
He'd know if it was ESS as he'd be used to letting off of the brake to get it started - but then, too often the first post leaves out 75% of the whole story leaving us to 20 questions.
So I guess we don't really know!

Bad starters on a 3.6 is almost, not quite, but almost as rare as a bad carburetor on a diesel - you just don't see it.

Good point. I'm not sure why a bad starter would make it shut off. The ESS was still engaged, but when the Jeep shut off at the the stop light, letting go of the brake and stepping on the gas did nothing. It was dead. I had to put it in park, turn it off and then attempt to restart.

That's exactly as expected. The ESS will attempt a start - and fail if it doesn't.
So the bad starter prevented the ESS from starting it, and you had to keep trying to get it to actually work.
However, it's very odd to me that the starter failed - and constantly trying and trying finally got it to work.
Once they die to that extent with no sound at all, no clicking or buzzing or any sound, trying over and over and over is unlikely to make any difference.

So it is possible that it was a stop start event, and the starter just crapped out!

Update: Still having the same issue after the starter replacement. It mostly happens when the ESS has turned the engine off at a stoplight. I take my foot off the break and it will click like it's trying to do something and then die. I have to put it in park and press the start button a few times to get it going again.

It also happens, once in a while, when I first try to start the jeep. It can take multiple presses of the start button to get it started.

Ideas?

I am taking it back to the dealer next week, unless I get stranded at a stop light for good. I've been driving with the ESS turned off for the time being.

Starter relay?

Have someone check battery voltage while someone else is inside trying to start it and see if there's either a draw on the battery - indicating at least something is pulling power, or, the battery itself is dropping to voltage too low to crank it.

Does the "ACC" and "RUN" lights on the start button outer ring illuminated when you attempt a restart" If not, may have an issue with the "Keyless Ignition Node Module" (that is what the start button assembly is called) either with the module or possible wiring issue between it and RF hub it communicates with.

There is a two wires that go between the start button and the RF hub for switch position and a Security communication. If any of that is interrupted, the RF Hub will not give the BCM authority to complete the start sequence.

I'll look and make sure, but I believe the lights for ACC and RUN stay on when this happens. Thanks for the feedback.

You could also try carrying the other Key Fob instead to see if it still does it. If it does still happen, I would try the "Backup Starting Method" of holding the key fob to the outer button ring and then pushing the start button. This may isolate it down to a FOB issue.
