Hello,

I am looking for some assistance " HELP" regarding my Jeep's steering and alignment after installing a Steer Smarts YETI XD Drag Link.

My Jeep rubicon currently has a 3-inch lift kit and 37-inch tires. After installing the lift and replacing the factory drag link with the YETI XD DragLink, I took the vehicle back to the shop that installed the lift. Unfortunately, they were unable to properly align the Jeep.

I then contacted Steer Smarts for assistance and was referred to a dealer about 52 miles from my home called Texas Truck Works, which sells Steer Smarts products and stated they could perform the alignment. After paying for the alignment and driving the Jeep, I noticed thesteering wheel was still not centered and the Jeep continues to pull to the Right, which is the same issue I was experiencing before.

When I returned and discussed the problem with the shop, they showed me the alignment readings on their computer and stated that everything was within specification and that there was nothing further they could do. They also mentioned that they had stopped selling theYETI XD Drag Link because they had experienced issues with it in the past.

I contacted Steer Smarts again to explain the situation and ask if there were any other recommended shops in the Houston area that couldhelp diagnose and correct the issue. However, I was informed that the only other recommended location was in Dallas.

At this point, I am looking for recommendations for a qualified shop in the Houston area that is experienced with lifted Jeeps, Steer Smartssteering components, and proper alignment of vehicles with 37-inch tires.

Any assistance, HELP, feedback, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Some aftermarket steering stabilizers are not fully 'neutral' and will push the steering slightly while driving.

Your Fox stabilizer may be one that does such. Surprised no shop thought to check that.

I did a quick search and found that some folks with Fox stabilizers have had this issue. It happens with some other brands as well.

If your steering wheel still isn't straight, you can fix that in your driveway with hand tools. An alignment rack is not needed/used for that.

Summary:

Try a stock stabilizer, or simply remove yours and see if the pull goes away, and have any 4x4 shop double check the steering wheel if you can't. Original shop probably got lazy and didn't pull the truck out and take it down the street to verify the wheel is perfect.

Do you not have any other 4x shops in the Houston area? Even if they’re not “authorized dealers” steer smarts is a pretty common upgrade on these. Most shops should have a working knowledge of them. I’d be very concerned that the shop you went to had to rely on a computer to tell them it was right. A good off-road shop should know better. Computer gets ya in there but a magnetic angle finder and a ruler will tell you better if the customer says “it ain’t right”.

I had the full Steersmart XD setup on my Diesel that has 6inch lift, 1 tons on 42s and never had an issue with alignment or steering other than constantly bending the bar or breaking the end link. The issue may be with the griffin as I understand it, it is supposed to absorb shocks to the wheel. When you are turning the wheel or they are doing the alignment it is possible that the griffin is taking some the load and when then alignment is done everything is off because the griffin goes back to neutral. This is just my thoughts and I could be completely off base with them as well. I didn't have the griffin on mine. The shop I take mine too also measures the wheels on each side and makes sure everything is actually centered as well.

I do not get the problem installing the griffin attenuator is supposed to solve. With the steering wheel not centered is the problem the steering trying to go back to center they should be able to adjust the length to center the wheel and recheck alignment since one affects the others. If there is not enough adjustment ask the manufacturer to solve the issue with a shaft with enough adjustment or allow it to be returned. Maybe they could ship you the non griffin if it has more adjustment.

To fix the pull to the right and center your steering wheel, you need a specialized 4x4 shop that is comfortable with lifted solid-axle vehicles and the adjustable collars of the Steer Smarts drag link.

AWT Off Road: Located in Northwest Houston at 11350 Northwest Fwy, they are a premier Jeep superstore with deep expertise in 37-inch tires and Steer Smarts components.
Offroad Brothers 4WD: Located at 14300 Northwest Fwy, they are highly recommended by local off-roaders for their honest, expert suspension installations and alignments.
4Low Concepts: Located at 1651 Blalock Rd, they focus on suspensions and alignments and are widely praised for troubleshooting and centering aftermarket steering wheels correctly.
You're welcome.

The steering wheel not centered is generally an issue with adjustment of the draglink, although the tie rod and trackbar also play a part in the equation. But primarily it is a matter of adjusting the draglink to the correct length so that the steering wheel is centered. The SteerSmarts setup doesn't change that. As you lift, the trackbar and drag link both need to be longer to keep the axle centered side to side and the steering wheel straight.
Honestly, it is easy to adjust your draglink so that the steering wheel is centered, as well as adjust your trackbar so that the axles is centered side to side. Always adjust the axle centering side to side first, then center the steering with the draglink because changes to the trackbar length will throw off the draglink length. That a shop could not do that makes me not want to have them work on my Jeep.

The pull to the right is likely not related, and may have nothing to do with alignment. As mentioned, some steering stabilizers are gas pressurized so that they are constantly trying to extend. That means they are constantly pushing on the steering in that direction. In the case of your JT, that push is to the right. A simple test is to remove the steering stabilizer and see if the pull to the right goes away. The three options for that are, live with it, run a cheaper steering stabilizer that is not pressurized, or run a through rod steering stabilizer that does not do that. Fox and TeraFlex both offer a through rod SS that does not cause a pull to the right.
