Didn't you mean to say that the circuit board needs power? The RFID chip is a passive device that works without the battery.

BTW, is it possible to buy the RFID chip separately and program it to the vehicle? Or do I have to buy another fob to cannibalize? I like the idea of the Threedom key ring with the chip, leaving the huge fob behind (since mine has no buttons anyway), but I'd prefer to leave my two existing fobs intact.

Yes, contrary to a post by the forum member earlier in this thread, the RFID chip alone does not behave as mentioned in that post.

When you walk up to your JL, to unlock/lock, ... to see the JT interact with you and your fob, you have to have a circuit board with a serviceable fob battery. The RFID chip does not come into play in this situation... it does not do as mentioned in that earlier post.

You can supposedly, source the exact RFID chip alone.... but you are far better off buying a new fob (do not buy a previously used/programmed one) and have it programmed in regard to your JT. Yes, you can have more then two fobs programmed to a JT. I myself have 4.

FYI: Some guy's / gals, just pull the RFD chip out of their second fob. They use that RFID chip in conjunction with a Threedom Waterproof Key Holder. They then take the factory fob with loose fob battery and stash it / hide it well, in the vehicle..

Do know that a factory fob you that carefully pull the RFID chip out of is left undamaged. It's very easy to revert back to the stock fob should you want to. Takes minutes to do..

If the notion that putting a fob in a rifle cabinet kills them then so would a faraday bag. I've kept my fobs in bags for over a year now and several states away from the truck. They are fine. The fob is not a transponder.

You can test the RFID power thing yourself because there's three things going on... the two battery powered radio components (higher frequency button functions, lower frequency proximity functions) and a separate RFID chip for emergency use. Watch the AJT fob video to see what I'm talking about. The RFID chip is passive and even if you remove it, the keyless entry/start and buttons will work as long as you have power.

This is what makes these systems vulnerable to a repeater attack - it's just a low frequency radio signal that can be replicated much like a ham/GMRS signal. RFID requires proximity of a few inches which is why they tell you to press the start button with the end of the fob where the chip is located.

So never keep your keys near outside windows or doors at home if you park outside.

I keep my spare in a gun safe as well. With it being in a big metal box what would be the need for additional protection using aluminum foil? As it's used as a spare just remove the battery and keep it on the shelf inside the safe. Quickly insert it and snap the case back together if you need to use it.

As a spare it will still start truck with a dead battery just push start button with key fob to start

I used the hack of keeping your key fob wrapped in aluminum foil. The purpose is to keep the barbarians from intercepting and copying the generated electronic signal in order to steal your truck. It was a spare fob that I kept stored in the gun safe. While it did work, it also killed the battery in the fob.

The fob I use on a daily basis is working fine. The one that was never used and stored in the foil is dead as a door nail. I don’t know, but I suspect that when it loses contact with the truck, it sends out continuous pulses to try to establish contact? Again, just a guess as I really have no idea?

Any of you smarter than me guys (@ShadowsPapa ?) care to weigh in?

Mmmmm OKAY.... forget the aluminum foil and just remove the battery to begin with...
(Of course keep the battery and fob stored together)

Is there a significant threat of theft in your areas or are you just being very precautionary? I’ve always been a bit paranoid of people stealing my stuff (not leaving my bike out, always making sure doors are locked, no valuables in plain sight, etc.) in general because of where I grew up but never considered needing to hide my fob due to an increased risk.
