most rules are recommended guidelines to cover your ass in common use cases. When you throw away logic, one finds riding the dildo of rules can be just as rough as riding dildo of consequences.
So what you're saying is, don't be a dildo? LOL

What’s work?
Off road is experience, common sense, reading the ground and knowing the machine and how to manipulate it, in essence using your head. The only good add on is tires, that is the make or break element of it, even then I have witnessed things on soccer moms tires I’d thought not possible. 4WD isn’t a mode to be selected it’s a tool to get somewhere or out of something, on the same level as a winch or traction board, just a tool. For me it’s a last resort or clearly is absolutely needed to navigate something.
My Willys Poors edition has the LSD and it’s impressive. What this truck can do in 2WD is solid. The factory BFG MTs help immensely with those efforts. Been through nasty washes where two tires are enjoying air time, just working the parking brake is enough work rear diff in and pull through it. It has climbed trails with barely a scratch from the tires in 2WD where I just knew at some point the front diff would be in considering it is a truck so it does not enjoy the benefits of an SUV. These little truths get overshadowed by social media and the interwebs so newcomers believe to off-road $10K worth of shit bling is needed to off-road thanks to a FB feed. When in reality should save the shit bling and spend $10K in gas and learn something. The truth is you learn more in 2WD than in 4WD because in the end it makes you learn what to do and when to do it.

I probably spend 95% of the time in the dirt in 2wd, especially in the mojave. It cracks me up when I watch tfl and the second they are on a trail it is 4Lo and lockers. It's a dirt road most of the time. Turning radius is better, ride is better, and I can roll at much higher speeds so why would I be in 4HI let alone 4LO with lockers on when I don't need them?

Maintain slow speeds and less brakes.
Which is fine if I'm using it to descend a steep grade where I want slow speeds, which is far less often than some seem to think. 1st gear even in 2wd will keep from having to brake down moderate hills.

Well having experience or some skills while knowing your vehicle goes a long ways.

Just like when I'm in OBX, I don't air down because I know how to drive in the sand.

And for the snarky folks out there that might have a comment about blah blah blah you should always air down. I will leave you with this thought, do you think we air'd down our trucks in Iraq???? My armored M114 HMMV that tipped the scales at near 15,000 lbs fully kitted out with weapons, ammo and personnel.
I hit the trails every day a couple minutes from my house. I hardly ever air down because I don’t want to have to air back up every time and have had zero issues. Would my tires last a little longer if I did? Probably would but the convenience and time saved by not having to air back up every time is worth a few extra miles of wear for me.

As far as the original topic - yes, these trucks are remarkable in what they can do in 2wd. Good tires plus good driving skills will get you very far on seemingly impassable terrain.

I often like to play that game of seeing how far I can go without engaging 4wd also. Throttle control and the ability to pick a good line will almost always get you there.

Love my truck!

I’ve found this approach also helps to avoid the really bad moments because 9/10 if you get stuck in 2WD you just have to lock-in and you’re good. If you start in 4WD and get stuck you may have taken yourself too-far before realizing it 🤣
