Hey all,

Current owner of a 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road. It’s almost paid off, and I really like it except for 2 aspects: the fuel economy is abysmal (about 10-15 mpg real world) and I would like higher towing capacity. The JL forums confirmed the Jeep gets slightly higher fuel mileage, but I wanted to ask y’all for what you’re getting on the JT’s, I imagine it’s a bit worse than the JL. Appreciate any input!

PS: I’m also considering the WL for obvious reasons, I’m just worried about the off road capability. I need a pretty capable vehicle for work, and nowadays really the only 4x4 system that is widely available on the GC is QuadraTrac I.

Do not buy a Jeep for mpg.

If you have the Jeep itch, you’re going to scratch it. Yolo.

18-20, mostly-stock Overland.

Problem with Jeeps is that everyone modifies them, so you can't really compare things like mileage very easily. Safe to say you'll beat your 4Runner's mpg in a stock Gladiator though.

Although I think something must be up for yours to be getting that atrocious of mileage. Most 4Runners I know of get better than that. Have you modified it quite a bit? And if so, are you going to also modify the Gladiator in the same way? That'll be a huge implication to this.

I have a 2020 JT with the max tow package. 2” lift on 35s. I get 14 maybe 16 mpg average on a good day. I just towed a 5000lb camper 1800 miles round trip to TN and back to CT. Averaged 9mpg.
I wouldn’t buy a JT for gas mileage.

2021 Mojave with 2” spacer lift and BFG all terrain 37x12.5 17’s and stock gears. I am 16-18 all the time depending on where I’m going. Traveling from Michigan to North Carolina highway driving I get 19mpg. I’ve never understood why others get such poor mileage (not that I get great mileage).

The jt, when lifted a little with good tires is awesome off-road. Good stock but way better with clearance and big tires.

Mojave on 35's with a manual trans: 13 mpg city and 15-17 highway.
The automatics seem to be a bit better

Mojave's and Rubicons have the same gearing

If you want fuel economy in a Gladiator the ecodiesel is the engine for you. That will get 28 mpg highway.

But I have heard they can be problematic.

Average about 16 day to day - 50/50 cycle, JTR, FastTop + 10k winch only mods. We spend at least 20% of weekly driving time on forest roads or worse which counts for probably -1mpg average.

I've driven a current gen 4Runner with an Icon lift a bit. It's a different beast than the jeep. If you appreciated the cargo space on the 4Runner then the most comparable jeep would be a JT with a top over the bed. The 8HP50 is a far, far better transmission than the toyota. I found the latter irritating while the ZF design is striking in how good it is. Seeking shelter from a nasty storm the 4Runner would be a nicer space to be than the jeep, but the jeep has much better visibility, especially to the front.

Jeep | Toyota both have merits and will get you the same places, but the characters are vastly different as also can be the case with their fans. The 4Runner was born with credibility whereas the gladiator has had to prove it as the new kid.
