There is a baby lions back just past hells gate entrance but the OG lions back has been closed for many years as far as I know.
Correct. It’s been MANY years since it was open as a trail for regular use. I believe it’s only open for special use now. Request and get approved type thing to reduce wear and tear and ensure safety.

Our first trip out there, a buddy of mine broke the front driver shock mount off twice (at the axle). Both times we went into town and had it welded back on.

The second trip another friend smashed their rear driveshaft on the exit of Hells Revenge. So we pulled that out and they drove to the hotel using 4WD to have front wheel drive. The next morning they drove to shop and grabbed a use driveshaft and we swapped it in at the hotel.

That same trip yet another friend had a nut come off a control arm bolt. Luckily didn't lose the bolt and got back to town to buy a nut. We also found the front lower control arms on his Jeep had been installed backwards somehow (with the bend outward instead of inward) and we flipped those around in the hotel parking lot.

That's the extent of our trail issues.

On a trip I didn't go on out there (but same friends involved) a JK 3.6L with a supercharger had a lot of problems on the trail. Getting hot, belts, etc.

The worst problem I’ve had mechanically was a broken rear axle shaft on a 9 rated trail in sand hollow. But drove it to the shop on 3rd super slowly and gently. Another time on holy cross in CO I bent a rear driveshaft, but didn’t even know it until after I aired up. Vibration started around 45mph. So I drove home with flashers on at 40. Swapped it out the next day in the driveway with the old one.
