SHADOWSPAPA -I see you are a very knowledgeable individual I almost wrote dark shadows what a tv show.I feel your experience with the salesman. When I have ever traded vehicles I write down on a piece of paper what I will take for mine and what I will give for theirs.I put that in my back pocket .When I traded my 2019 rubi wrangler for my glad.I was there for three hours. To funny salesman would go into MNGR office come back give me the numbers I would say no,off he went again.
He finally came out with better numbers then I wrote down.I pulled that piece of paper out and said thanks for the better deal. You should have seen the look on his face when he looked at my numbers.Do what you feel comfortable with.
Central Iowa is really goofy with vehicle sales. Every dealer I've worked with sticks to that MSRP and the way they change numbers around is what they give for your trade. They stick to MSRP, but manipulate the trade-in number and they target "monthly payments". Even those with internet ads showing a discount, when you talk to them it's another matter. Deery Brothers has Jeeps listed with up to 2 grand off but when you actually talk to them, it's MSRP. Their out is a small disclaimer on the web site. I told them I contacted them because of the Jeeps listed on their site under MSRP and the stammering and stuttering and no, we sell MSRP - I could have really gotten into it with them but it wasn't worth the time. I said thanks for your time, but I'm not paying MSRP.

I got Stew Hansen to back down from MSRP by walking right up to that line, my toes just touching the line, pen in hand, wife with checkbook out and said, well, another dealer will do this same vehicle for 4 grand less, if you will knock 2 grand off this one, fine, otherwise I go to them.
Man, you should have seen the looks - the sales guy quickly walks to the managers office, they both come out and the manger says - so, if we knock 2,000 off, you'll go ahead? Yes. I'd never seen a sales person in such a way - maybe because they had ordered it for me and to not actually sell an ordered vehicle would be a strike against them? Dunno....... but they were not pleased and quickly took off 2 grand.

Funny thing - the emails and phone calls from Dewey have stopped - before I told them what MMR was, and showed them a real number for what I could buy one for, they were calling and emailing. I sent the sales guy an email telling them the MMR for mine and what I could get new for at another dealership and it's like the line went dead.

Central Iowa sucks for buying vehicles. They are all the typical types like from the 60s and 70s.
It's got to be one of the worst states in the country to buy new vehicles with any sort of real dealing.

Finally caught up on this thread! I've been having the exact discussion with my wife (and myself), as I really hate the crow-hop on the 2020 u-joints.

I have a 2020 Rubicon. I just built out my exact specs on the Jeep builder, and to purchase today would be about $15,000 (including destination charge) more than I paid. Granted, I got a deal, but I won't see that type of deal again. That doesn't include taxes and registration. Mine is only at 16k miles, so I'm not particularly worried about warranty and I have the bumper to bumper extended warranty to 100k (and it includes lifts and larger tires).

Anyway, in short, for me, it is way cheaper to pay $2500 for the RCV Performance axles (installed price), than to upgrade just for the auto-4hi. I'll still have to shift, but no more crow-hop. Something to consider.

I have the same habit that my father had.I always go back to the same dealer. I may have more wiggle room because I have bought my last five jeeps from them not sure. They do know if the numbers don't match my paper in my pocket or with the glady a better deal .I will walk away.I don't need to trade , unfortunately if I see a vehicle I want .Well the check book comes out.

Possible monkey wrench in the works........... dealers don't want to give good trade deals on new JTs when the arrival is so far out (2 months or so). If they give you a price on your trade now - when the new one arrives they may be stuck in a down market, your trade will be 2 months older and have more miles.
It makes total sense - frustrating, but it makes sense from a business standpoint.
They give a discount on the new they have to make money on your trade. If they give you high dollar on the trade and things crap out, they are stuck. Even if things don't, they can't cut the price on new and give top on the trade as that's where the money will be made up on the great deal on the new one. I don't begrudge any honest dealer their need to make money to stay open.
It's one of those things you know the logic, you trust they are right, but you don't like the situation anyway.
If I were to trade mine and pay MSRP, I'd get a good deal on my trade.
The trick is to pull both ends to compress the middle numbers.
Looks like it ain't gonna happen.
Still keeping eyes open and hoping something comes about.
One idea is that if I found one on a lot that matched my needs, it could all be done at the same time - they'd have mine sooner and it would be less risk.
But - there's nothing in the country that matches my truck or my list of options!
Jeep's site sucks in that way because you can only search within 250 miles of your zip code.
When you go up and change your zip code, those 800 Gladiators for sale suddenly turn into 4 and you can't click the see more button - it's gone! So you start over with a different zip code to search a different part of the country and find 1,100 Gladiators for sale, nothing matches, you change zip codes and it drops down to a handful and the see more button disappears.
They need to hire a new web developer! That script is loony, and broken. You should be able to switch zip codes, it search that area and returns a list - instead you have to refresh and start over. OR, they need to take away the 250 mile restriction. Good grief, you are only searching your own state and part way into the neighboring states. If there was something in Indiana, I'd go there.
Anyway, Jeep dot come needs some script kiddy to fix their site.
On the other hand, it looks like my choice of Gladiator is a one of a kind!
And I've learned - dealerships don't stock Overlands, let alone loaded Overland! And many Gladiators out there don't even have LED or other popular equipment.
Frustrating............ I guess it's how it is these days.

So basically in that wall of text, you cannot find what you want. So why not order?

Ya missed why I was looking for something on a lot - the first part explained why.

If I order, it takes 2 months to get a new one.

No dealer will talk trade value. They want to wait until the new vehicle arrives and then talk trade value.
So not knowing what I may get for my "trade in", I can't say whether or not it would work.
Dealers won't venture a guess. "we'll talk the value of your trade when the new one arrives".
Will it be 37,000? Will it be 44,500? who knows.
There is no way of knowing what the difference would be, unlike buying off the lot where you make the deal in one day - or at least know where you stand that same day.

When we bought my wife's 2021, we got a dollar amount for her 2018 trade at the time the new one was ordered. No one does that now.

Cant have it all. I think you are spinning too many plates and not being able to control the future on a trade in value is messing with your OCD. Seems you are juggling a want vs. a need.

Even in normal times, many dealers will not lock in trade in value until it is actually time to trade it in.

Never had a problem in the past - get a trade number with the provision there would be a deduction for additional miles. It was easier when the time was shorter and there weren't crazy ups and downs, and possible supply chain issues. It's weird times. Used market is up and down, drifting downward now which makes it easy to see why they don't want to be held to any numbers. Who knows the way the whole economy is going what stocks will be doing, inflation, used vehicles, the auto market for used vehicles could come crashing down.

I did get a rather odd message from the local dealership used car guy asking for the VIN for my truck. I thought things had "gone dark" that direction, and maybe it still has, but I had to wonder why he was asking for my VIN.

Auto and truck purchases are almost always "Want vs. need". What a person needs is just transportation that fits a budget and holds their family members.

Just sold my wife's Jeep to Driveway. It took about a month from their quote to finalize the deal, and I was told to keep driving it normally during that time. I think if I would have slow walked the process, I could probably have kept the Jeep another few weeks. That would get you awful close to an ordered Gupton Jeep timeline.

That was also a thought since they had the better numbers of the online places.
Waiting for the final numbers on new from Gupton. They asked for my build PDF and I sent it along so I may hear back in a couple of days.
It would give me time to take the bumper and winch off my truck but leave me with another dilemma - I have 5 matching tires and 5 matching wheels so I'd have to go buy wheels and tires to put on it since I want to keep these.
It's looking less and less like something can work out with the spread in timing and other factors.
Local trade would have been easier, especially swapping the tires over, but it's central Iowa and dealers are MSRP only.

It's not looking good unless I figure out a couple of details.

I'm right there with ya, almost the exact mileage, but you have some very nice equipment and accessories that I passed on. I think the dealer here offered me about 37,000 sight unseen. All that work and goodies add up. All things considered, I just don't have the energy or time to start over again, and I'm still using my JT for our small camp trailer, that and I'm getting close to retiring at some point, preferably with out a vehicle payment. But, it's always worth the ponder. Hope all is well with you.

I'm "discounting" or rather "not counting" most of the things I've done with mine since almost all are basic bolt-on changes. Unbolt them. Time is the only issue but my bet is I could swap back in a day, a bit over at the most. Still, though, that does count as I could otherwise do other stuff.

I know where that is - drove by or through on my way to Fort Wayne several times. There's a decent quilt shop there my wife wanted to stop at one time.

I'm also starting to see all of this "we want your car even if you don't buy ours" stuff as BS to get you in the store. When you actually start talking money, suddenly they aren't that anxious to buy.
Locally, they are pretty laid back and low dollar on the "offers". No wonder they keep saying they want to buy cars, because they never actually end up buying any as they won't come up to what the internet places do.

It's always been that way. Always. But, people don't seem to realize this and end up at the dealership thinking that the dealer really wants their vehicle.

Anyhow, too bad they don't want to deal on your trade. When I did a factory order for my Mojave, I did all the pricing negotiation without ever mentioning a trade. After that was done, I said "I'll stop by with my trade-in". They agreed to the trade-in value, put it on the paperwork, we all signed it, and then they placed the factory order. I asked about any restriction on miles while waiting for the Mojave to arrive and they told me "we don't care, drive it".
